Considering the new jobs don't even have base-classes, and *not* hanging any other classes/jobs off existing classes, my assumption is that they would rather *not* have classes share 2 jobs as of now.

Well, not quite. Quite the opposite, if anything. Simply because Conjurers get Cleric's Stance by nature. In case of summoners, they can't get access to Cleric's Stance simply because it's Conjurers, White Mage and Scholars exclusive. But if it's a DPS class that branches off Conjurer originally, they'd have it regardless. Effectively this would mean:
A DPS class that should deal enough damage to be even considered as a DPS class - (a lot) more than healers the very least
A DPS class that gets access to healing worth casting. Even with the 20% healing magic potency reduction from cleric's stance*. Also gets the traited Stoneskin version, unlike other classes.
So in a nutshell: A DPS class with respectable healing and mitigation on par with a White Mage.
* Assuming a DPS class branching off Conjurer would need to be in Cleric's Stance to heal, rather than DPS
That would certainly keep it useful, but being conceptually appealing in gameplay is something altogether different there...
Side-note: I really miss being able to heal decently enough on SMN between DoTs... essentially since around Stone Vigil. But at that time, can I really say my gameplay wasn't just a SCH with a dps pet so that I could make better use of my filler period (Cures rather than Ruin)?
A good point about CS, but I dismissed CS out of hand because one of two scenarios would be very likely:
A) CS is somehow rendered ineffective for the DPS job, perhaps similarly to how they worked it for PvP.
B) CS works, but the job ends up with much poorer DPS to balance its WHM-like healing power, so no one wants it for either healing or DPS.
Remember the "red mage will never happen" discussions a while back? This is pretty much a repetition of it, except with Geomancer.
I understand they disabled Cleric's Stance in PVP simply because healers were too broken - For anyone who experienced a healer horde charging at you in frontline. I'm not so sure if they can do that in PvE. As disabling Cleric's Stance would mean denying them an ability of their base class. With the same line of thinking; they could have disabled Energy Drain for Scholars, because they're healers. But they didn't.
I'm interested in whether SE is planning to create any more branch jobs as they did with Arcanist: http://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/commen...vs_split_jobs/ (fairly old, though)
Edit:
I've found the translated article on the bluegartr forums: http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/122...edia-Interview
Specifically about this part:

Last year when Scholar was introduced at E3, it was mentioned that it would branch off from the same class as Summoner, and this would be a mechanic that would be used more, but it has yet to happen for any other class. You haven’t announced anything yet, but are there any other plans to introduce anything like this? For example, another swordsman besides Paladin?
Well, we need to look into this and whether we want to keep that plan, it’s something we have to consider as we add new jobs and classes. One of the more difficult things with the system is that when a job is derived from a class, it's tied to the class's actions. Also, when we make multiple jobs from one class, the weakness with having multiple jobs branch out of one class without being able to freely switch stats around is exposed. This wasn’t a problem initially because both of those jobs were simultaneously added and it was planned from the start, but now we have to carefully think about this. One thing we could consider, for example, is a hybrid job derived from more than one class, but it may change depending on what we want to add. The number of jobs will increase even further with 3.0 (the expansion pack), and at that point we might decide on an entirely new mechanism, so please hang on for further details.
And what’s the timing of that?
Well, we’ve finally just announced a new job, and I think you all still need some time to play that. Indeed, there are more classes and jobs on the way, but please enjoy this one for now (laughs).
