agreed.. dungeons are fun and all, but its not the end all be all.. in fact the entire reason I DONT and could never get into WoW was because of this.. its SOOOO Boring.
I'm ok with instanced content as long as its not just dungeon raids.. I want to see more events like BCNM, KSNM, Limbus, Dynamis..
I also want to see Sky, Sea type end game and HNM's.. You don't have to do the HNM's if you don't want to.. just because YOU don't like them, doesn't mean there aren't people who don't.

the other open world u was thinking of was Garrisons, they were very fun at there prime, specially remember the sandy one. lots of mobs in waves but acually hard as crap. u quadruple the rate of pops in behest, make the mobs dynamic and i think we can have something just as fun. i not do behest probably since first 3months of launch lol, pointless stuff. specially past 20, that another thing they had great rewards, mannequin body parts.
sky and sea was one of my favorite types of endgame i'd say, they were very exiting and fun. and ls's were doing them like 7days a week if wanted to, that can't get any more casual if u ask me, log in and go do sky lol. beats 2days a week stuff, the wait is the bigger challenge of it and not cool. games need to get ride of timers. i can see some form of this with the quick repops of nm's we have now being very entertaining and competitive. tons of farm mobs and fast poping side nm's. maybe the more farm mobs u kill in group the higher drop rates u create on side bosses. what have u lol, i can day dream on endgame all day.
but like forbin said u don't have to do them, hell i didn't join a hnmls till my last year or so of ffxi after a 5year run, granted i killed all of them prior either way, i thought the same, didn't want to sit around all day for pops, but in long run i ended up waiting for more regular nm pops solo for loot when i could of just been rich of hnm lol. u had lots of options in ffxi to pick and chose ...hopefully this game will cater the same and have so much endgame that it leaves most normal players with the option of witch ones they want to do.
by the end of ffxi life i was doing a split of every 2weeks sky and 2weeks sea, 2 enerjah, 4salvage, 7assaults 2dynamisis, full time hnm's's all week and 1nyzle every 2weeks, throw in few times a week merits and party grinds, some ks and forget the one from cop every week to boot and i was doing endgame every day some days 3diff events in a day all day long. that is alot for most and they all aimed to please lol. by that time i was done with story missions and limbus though, my ls was doing 2 limbus runs simultaneously and shared the loots and poped nm's way fast, they rocked /shoutout. if u can say u have to do one over the other then this is way untrue and u can't be saying that they shouldn't bring out this much content either they should bring out even more this time around. choice is choice. -

Actually, if you have looked beyond dungeons/raids, you see (and shows mostly in story quests) that instanced events have taken place in the open world, I believe this method is used so no one outside your party can interfere with what you are doing. I think this is the concept they want to go with. Raids need to be instanced, assuming you are setting it up similar to how WoW's raids work. Only other instances I have been in involved you still being on the world map, the difference is, the instanced event you are in just not allows other players to interfere.
Also, the HNM's and NM's are still open world and Hamlet Defense seems like it is something open world and not instanced. So lets just see how that works out. -

Compete for skill and make fights challenging enough so skill actually matters.

i think it really boils down to for me not if instanced or not instanced or even a mix of both, it's mostly 1 thing and thats full linkshell endgames or 8man endgame. can't speak for others but this is the major difference to me in them, yes ffxi had huge instanced stuff, this will be great even if it was all instanced. but that is all i'd like to see happen with this games direction to move toward endgames that aren't 8man dungeons. like warhammer and most mmo's lot or all of it is just 6man stuff, and that to me is just /nooooooooo.

I played FFXI for 5 years and loved every second of it. I was also single at the time. That meant I could play every day for as long as I wanted, and still couldn't keep up with everything FFXI had to offer.
The issue right now is that FFXIV can't please both types of crowds. You have the older me type that has a lot of time to play and you have the actual me type, with a family and kids and a full time job.
I think, with time, FFXIV will end up pleasing both groups, and have the HNM which we all love or the instanced raids which some don't like.
In my opinion, as long as they introduce new content every time suitable to both types, people will keep playing.
Meanwhile, I am sure the arguments on the forums will never cease. -

I have 2 thoughts to this subject.
In FFXI, when ZNM's were introduced, that system was my ABSOLUTE favorite. Yes, earning points to buy pops was a chore of a process at times, but the actual system itself was perfect. The rewards were pretty impressive, and you had a 100% shot at claim of your NM because you spawned it.
Other note I wanted to make was, being new to XIV, when I did my first leve and noticed the enemies spawn from my leve JUST for me, and I didn't have to fight for claim was really impressive. I don't play many MMO's so with that said this was new to me and I really like this system.
Instanced does not have to be something that loads you into a different zone. I can see the feeling of disconnect from that. But rather it can be in the open world with exclusive claim to you and your group. I have no problem with this whatsoever. -

yes in the tables we see more dungeons, of course we see more dungeons they need to put more of them. 2 dungeons is a joke. Things like caravan escort, primal fights, addional company quests/missions, additonal story quests/missions, additional quests, all these things will most likely be instanced. Are they exclusively dungeons? no. get a clue.
Before trying to say I (and others) pull these things out of thin air, maybe you should stop and think about it before posting.
Edit: so yeah, I maintain my position about heavily instanced game =/= exclusively dungeons while it does include them in the statement. Until a rep comes in and say: "sorry guys, FFXIV will be dungeons only with cities acting as hubs" then your, and so many other people, reaction is unbased. -
