I miss turning the Lamps on in Jeuno.
I miss turning the Lamps on in Jeuno.
I miss the boat being raided by pirates and having to fend them off, and failing to do so because that was impossible and scary.
I really hoped, back when ARR launched, that they had made airships and ferries work like they did in FFXII.
In FFXI, you could choose between Fast Travel (what we have now in XIV) or Cruise Speed. Cruise Speed was a separate instance of the airship in which you could stay for as long as you wished. The airship traveled in a looping sky environment, and SE could've easily done the same with the sea. To end the Cruise Ride, all you had to do was go to the cabin and click "Sleep to Destination".
Travelling on airships and ferries is something I really miss from previous titles (and especially FFXI), and I admit I died a little when I saw that airships in XIV were not only minuscule, but also void of instances.
I'll never forget my 1st boat ride from Mhaura > Selbina when FFXI 1st launched. There were probably 30 players on the boat and half way thru our trip the Kraken appeared. It was a slaughter, after it decimated everyone top side a person decided to run below w/ aggro killing everyone else lol. when the boat docked it dumped a bunch of dead bodies on the ground and I don't think anyone waiting for the Mhaura > Selbina trip wanted to board the boat.
*The boat sets sail, hold filled with frightened, shivering newbies.*
Foolishly bold newbie: I just wanna take a look outside. I'll be right back!
Other newbies: No, don't do it!
Foolishly bold newbie: Ahh! Sea Horror! Save meeeee! *Runs back into the hold, Sea Horror hot on his heals*
*Minutes later*
Hapless adventurer: I'd like to buy a ticket to Mhaura, please! Erm... wait... Is that man unloading corpses?
Ticket salesman: Yes sir! That's his job.
Hapless adventuer: There seem to be quite a lot of them...
Ticket salesman: Yes sir! Sea travel can be dangerous, you know!
Hapless adventurer: Were there, in fact, any survivors at all?
Ticket salesman: Well, the Captain always seems to pull through all right.
Hapless adventurer: ...
Ticket salesman: That will be 100 gil, please!
Hapless adventurer: All right.
Seriously, though, I wouldn't object to a scenic boat ride or two added to the game, like Carpenter's Landing. But LIKE Carpenter's Landing, these boat rides should be an optional method of transport, there for people who want to enjoy the view, or to provide an interesting venue for fishing. With the possible exception of the first time you use them, they shouldn't be the ONLY method for getting from place to place.
Boat rides in FFXI could be pretty aggravating. Want to get to Purgonorgo Isle from Bibiki Beach? Boats depart once every 12 game hours (roughly 29 minutes), and the ride takes 3 game hours (roughly 7 minutes). If you just miss the boat, that means you could be waiting as long as 36 minutes before you'll set foot on Purgonorgo Isle. Hope you brought a book to read!
