It doesn't have to be a new event. It can be the exact same event as the prior runs, leaving those that have done it before with no concerns (as they won't have to worry about being bothered by it again).

It's just how MMOs work. Think of how many times events are repeated each and every day, and nobody bats an eye about it. Every single player here has been (for example) duped by a traitor, captured by the Amalj'aa, and served up on a platter to Ifrit - and then defeated him. All the exact same story, all at different times, from the day the game launches to the day it goes offline forever.

There is absolutely zero difference between that and new players experiencing Lightning's event. Most events in this game are not one-shot. And I am unaware of any rule that states "seasonal" events have to be.

The scions do make me feel less unique whenever they say that I'm their only hope or the greatest warrior of Eorzea... I know they say that to everyone else. :(

Lightning Returns is coming to PC before too long, likely within a few months.

I am betting there is a chance they will bring event back for its launch and to celebrate some FF13 series pack that'll end up online.

I hope that if they do bring back the Lightning Strikes event, they bring in weapons for the new jobs. They could use Noah's spear-blades for the ROG, Caius' sword for the DRK, probably make the AST's weapon look like Cocoon (perhaps even Crystal Pillar'd Cocoon, if they wanna get fancy), and use that rifle you always see the ranged PSICOM guys using for MCH.

I just want the Lightning themed gear. I'd PREFER the actual event happening just one more time, but it seems like the majority wouldn't be happy to see Lightning again, for various reasons, so it being on the cash shop wouldn't hurt me, and it would avoid any negative fan reactions.

Also, this topic got much more discussion than I thought it would.

Solves people crying for items they can no longer obtain.

Avoids having to have the event every year for the next ten years. Which even at this point would be ridiculous.
Imagine a new player in 2-3 years. "Isn't this a promo event for a game that came out almost 8 years ago??"

They have actually run the event 3 times now. After the 1st 2 times they said they were never running it again. They changed their minds once. I really don't see them changing their minds a 2nd time unfortunately. Most likely can be a cash shop item though.

You're assuming that Lightning Returns has already ended. Each game world has it's own timeline and when crossovers occur they could draw from any time before, during, or after the source game. A pre-"Lightning Returns" Lightning could appear in XIV next year just as well as she did last year.

No they didn't. All they said was that they didn't have any plans at the time about bringing it back. It was only players who tried to twist not having any plans for something into claiming they'd never do it.

The fact that it was available as free for a limited time...multiple times, makes it more acceptable to me.

If they bring the Lightning event items to the cash shop, I still really hope they make new weapons for the new jobs. I'd totally be willing to buy those...

While I think that after an event has been made free within game it is less insulting (I M O) to add it to the shop, those would actually be new items to the event.. Mayhap they place those new short time updated limited contents in the Golden Saucer? After a set and an announced time frame move those items to the cash shop with the rest of them.

I know its a bit of work but I feel first making the event within game and then after that doing whatever would be better, respecting the "limited time" event to the world but also letting people who missed out have hope and not go "damn that pumpkin head that is AWESOME, can never be mine.. that is quite upsetting".

Of course I don't like the idea of the cash shop but if we could keep SE focused on this sort of selling, that'd be great (imo). I dislike most the idea of exclusive content being available outside of expansion and game update.

If they have no intentions of running the event again just add it into the stylists hair list, it's been exclusive long enough and add the cloths/weapons to the novelty clothing vendor for a nominal fee.

I just can't understand how people line up and say "Well I guess I'd be ok if they charged me for this!"

Don't get me wrong. If I had it my way, we would never have a cash shop at all. I find the practice to be just plain greedy overall. I just think that if they must, they can at least do if for event stuff people missed and would otherwise never be able to get.
Not that I would ever buy them.

This is exactly my opinion on it. I would PREFER for these things to be free, or be purchasable with gil, but I also wouldn't mind it being on the cash shop if the price is reasonable. I do want these items, but if it costs me real money, the price could convince me to just not care anymore.

One of the main objections to a cash shop is that all prices there will be inherently unreasonable. It's a major part of the way such cash shops work.

Using the Lightning Strikes rewards as an example, when the event was active, it was possible to do the entire thing within a day. With subscriptions running between $10 and $15 per month, that means that it only cost the original players between 33 and 50 cents (actually less than that, because we could do other things that day as well), and for that, we got not only the rewards but the event itself. Giving just a small portion of that event (the rewards alone, without the activity) and giving it much later long after the charm of being new has worn off, would inherently be worth quite a bit less. If they charge anything above about ten or twenty cents for the entire package (hairstyle, full outfit, and all eight weapons), then it's grossly overpriced.

But cash shops aren't cost effective at reasonable prices. SE wouldn't want to have to process a special payment if they're only going to get ten cents for it. We're more likely to see a couple dollars or more per item than ten cents for the whole package. Developers put items into cash shops so that they can charge major-feature prices on trivial individual items. On F2P games, this makes sense, because those individual items have to in turn fund all the major features that are part of the base game. But here we're already paying for the major features with game purchase and subscription fees. We shouldn't have to fund them again with overpriced cash shop items.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware of that. By reasonable, I was thinking of no more than a few dollars. Besides XIV, which I only started playing recently, and Phantasy Star Universe back in the day, I really didn't play many pay to play games, so I'm definitely aware on how a cash shop really works.

I'd be willing to pay 3-5 dollars for the set, just costs me the chance to miss out on a good burger or something that week, I get the items I paid for, and SE gets it's share of profit.

If anything, a 3-5 dollar price tag would be pretty cheap compared to what some other games out there charge for cosmetic items.

Like I already said, I would still prefer a way to get them with in game currency or through another event, but I'm all good for a cash shop alternative.

The content is already there so I don't see any reason why they can't just make it a yearly thing if they wanted to. That being said though, if you unsub for whatever reason and miss it, you'd have to wait a year to do it (so why not put it in the cash shop and be done with it). Maybe they'll do both. Or maybe they'll just be nice and make it a gold saucer reward to exchange for GP.

That's because you're ignoring the difference between reasonable and cheap. Taking something that should be ten cents and charging five dollars for it is a five thousand percent markup. If that five dollar burger you compared it to were suddenly offered for two hundred and fifty dollars instead, that would be the equivalent of what you're calling "reasonable" when it's offered by a game company. Too many people ignore whether things are ridiculously overpriced or not so long as the price still falls into a range they can afford.

That's because most games that have cash shops are F2P. The way F2P games work is to use purchases of minor little cosmetic items to fund the development of all the major game systems which are given away for free to entice people into playing. You should assume that 99.9% of the money you pay for a cosmetic item in such games has nothing to do with the item you're ostensibly buying, but is simply the way that you pay for the whole game that you're playing.

In this case, that logic doesn't apply, because we're already paying for the game directly. The software purchases and subscription fees are paying for the game, and yet now, the cash shop is asking people to pay for the entire game all over again, by using the sort of F2P markups that are used to do just that.

Agree with you there!

I'm sure they try to maximize cost with how many will buy it for the most profit, but when it's 5 dollars an item, and figure 10,000 people will buy it, it seems over prices for a piece of code that likely didn't cost 50,000 to make.

I keep seeing people state that Lightning Returns has already been released and will not be released again.

And yet it's only been within the last two months that they released XIII-2 on PC...

I don't want lightning strikes back, I wanna see something new done.

Every time it returns its the same event, now if they changed a few things and added a second story to it and updates some stuff you get and not the same reason she was summoned to the world I would want to see it again.
I rather see something new though not same stuff over and over.

Once or twice is good but once you keep going its the same junk they did in FFXI +1 +2 Latent effect. this one gives you cookies, this one gives you raises, this one does nothing, this ones a different color and allows you to scoop better.
Though the events in FFXI never changed, I don't want same events over and over.

Nothing against anyone else but that's my opinion.

But they're not asking you to pay for these items, and buying them won't inhibit your ability to enjoy or play the game in anyway. I see no problem in event items that are unavailable anymore being put up on mogstation. You still get the opportunity to get these items during the events, but if you so happen to miss the event for whatever reason, and actually wanted any of the items, you have that as an option. I believe they were already doing that with the holiday items, I saw last year's items available on mogstation during the 2014 holiday event. Didn't care for those items, so I didn't buy. And this can help people get any items they may have wanted that wouldn't be available anymore otherwise. Completely optional, I see no loss.
