The Greywolf family must be a pretty big one too...
Also H.P. Lovecraft inspired names. I'd list some but can't remember the spelling and where the hell all the apostrophes go. This is the guy who brought us Cthulhu (not a name I see used in character names) but I do see offshoots based on the related mythology.
Daenerys Targaryen.
Every Server has one, or more in slightly misspellings...

Silvermoons everywhere!
Stark as a last name hands down.
Definitely "Highwind" as a surname. I've been doing a lot of groups lately, and it's been kind of shocking how many players have used that name. I can't really say anything, though, since I was seriously considering using it, myself, back when I was originally thinking about playing my Human character.
On pheonix I've bumped into so many Starks that now everytime I see one I roll my eyest
Cloud and Sephiroth are not that common.
Asuna Yuuki blows every names away, including the Highwinds.

Luna
Moon
I've seen the surname "Do'Urden" (of Drizzt Do'Urden fame) quite a few times. Hell, I know I've seen both Drizzt Do'Urden and Zaknafien Do'Urden in my server together, being the happy father and son! :P
I sat for 3 hours in the character creation window trying to find a name matching a good last name for my liking, which didn't seem to happen. I was so eager to finally log in and try the game that I said f*** it and went with the FF names list, and I like Vanille anyway.
Any combination of Final Fantasy names with the surnames "Strife" or "Highwind".
Any name from FF games, Naruto, SAO, or GoT.
Personally surprised at how FEW .Hack names I've seen. I think I've seen only one Tsukasa and maybe one Haseo, but that's it.
Surprisingly few Kikis....I can't imagine why...
Names like "Cloud" and "Sephiroth" are restricted, so you'll see misspellings of these names by lazy people who can't just think of something else to reference.
True, though there seems to be a heck of a lot more mancats named Nunh than Tia, although the lore indicates it should be the other way around. Lots of mancats think very highly of themselves, I guess.
Tia's everywhere. Luna's everywhere. Stark's everywhere. Cat/kat/kitty derived names everywhere. Do'Urden's everywhere. Majere's everywhere.
Oh and people trying to be comical. Things like Everqueef or Hasabooty.
Highwind, Strife, Lockhart, Stark and Lannister are the most common last names I see and take note of.
Also a lot of "Japanese"/Anime related names and I put Japanese in quotes since often times they sound Japanese or are random Japanese words smashed together and not actual names.
TBH, as someone of Japanese descent I really dont get the fixation many gamers have with things Japanese.
My name is totally not original. I go it from, umm . . . that ugh, book. YEAH! That Book . . . . you know, that the movie was made out of? And then there was a TV Series on it that was cancelled by Fox after 1 season?

The Evolution of my internet identity:
I have the impression people in this thread would be interested in original names.
I played a char in FFXI for 6 years, it was deleted by my sister-in-law who had access to the account via my brother. Re rolled a second character. and played FFXI for another year or so. (both original names)
FFXIV 1.0 : Rolled a lallafell, took 1st Char, "Taru'd" the name (Misneach - Mishini), took 2nd char, "Taru'd" that name (Dracien - Dracoto) and made it my char name (Mishini Dracoto)
FFXIV 2.0 - rolled a new char on an NA server and made it a Roe. Read Lore, Roe's are Germanic, so made it German -sounding. Misenklauph Drakkfhur.
I see more "kitty" than every other ff name combined...but I actually dont see that many ff names, just occasionally
So, I am also of European descent as I am of mixed heritage and I would find it just as strange if suddenly many gamers became fixated on things French, Dutch or whatever.
I just tend to find cultural fixations by groups of people strange, it just so happens that one of the big ones in the states is a fixation with Japanese culture and that comes off especially odd to me since I grew up with Japanese things being commonplace. Its a matter of perspective, hence why I said "as someone of Japanese descent". People being really into something that is commonplace to you and not really a big deal tends to come off strange. It was not an insult, just an observation and opinion.
People are free to name their fictional characters whatever they want as long as it is not offensive or against policy, just as I am free to have whatever feelings towards different fictional names or naming conventions.
My guess as to why Japanese players give their characters names that are more European based would be that one, they are Japanese and therefore want to name their characters something different and not Japanese, two, European names seem to fit better with the Fantasy setting and with the FF series as a whole.
Also, Europe is a continent and has many countries and cultures in it, whereas Japan is a single country and culture. So a more fair comparison would have been Europe and Asia.
