I think this is a good idea - levelling a crafting class to 15 doesn't take much time or effort, it makes sense from a lore point of view, and for those people not focused on crafting it means they don't have the pain of getting to 30 (which is much harder and more expensive).
Perhaps this could start as an 'apothocary' class, that specialises in using skills for placed/thrown/effect skills. Kinda like using items, but without the actual item usage part (just using a skill instead). SE have already said they didn't want any class relying on items (such as rogue/ninja with thrown items), so skills that behave like thrown concoctions (AOE explosion, knockback pulse, buffs, debuffs, DoTs, HoTs, etc). The job for Apothocary could then be Chemist, growing on the item-based skills with 'mixes' as job abilities - similar to the ninja's ninjitsu though perhaps with more healing/buffing benefits over damaging attacks
I can see some real merit in a chemist within FFXIV :-)
Having seen how Ninja works, a Chemist job for could have a similar thing to the Mudras for Mix, with different ingredients. Of course that takes up 4/5 skills... although that would (hopefully) be 4/7 skills in the expansion, wouldn't it?
Just to expand on this idea. Because I've always wanted a "Chemist" style healing class. Would be the HOTs you cast stack making it different combinations get different affects.
Example:
"Healing Oil" Cover a target granting a small boost to their natural healing over time. Instant Cast
"Cleanse" Wash Healing Oil off target to Heal 50% of their base HP. 2-3 Second Cast
"Phoenix Dust" Will immediately resurrect the Target. NOTE: Can only be placed on a target after obtaining "Wash". 5 Second Cast
OR
"Protective Coating" Adds a Bonus to the Target's Def. 2-3 Second Cast
"Chocobo Oil" Cover the Target with Chocobo Oil granting them a larger bonus to their HOT. 5 Seconds
"Blaze" Set and Oil on Fire. Granting a Haste Bonus and 'Cleanse' one negative effect. Instant Cast. NOTE: Can only be cast with Protective Coating and Disolve of all Chemicals.
So obviously these are only examples/thoughts to jump off from. But something like this would be a lot of fun.
Chemist is a good idea :) they are in FFT right? I think they sound like they actually might be good coming from the city-state that Alphinaud and Alisaie come from, they are a very learned city-state from the short stories and it would fit in with the people there.
