Actually, if the airship wouldn't be just a cutscene, but an actual ride, I would stop using teleport so much and start using airships more :)

A forced ride with cutscenes, no thanks. An area with more stuff to do? Sure! I guess it would be like a few new zones, but smaller and moving.
Heh, I remember boat rides with skeleton pirates,....or fishing on that boat and hauling up a gigantosquid!! Fun those days were. That made the rides interesting, cuase it only happened everyonce in a while.

no one has used air ships anymore since level 15 lol.
I too miss the days of having it take time to travel from one location to another. I used to enjoy the boat rides and airship rides in FFXI. Throw in some random events that can occur during travel too to spice up the experience.
lol I actually use airships and chocobo porters all the time. If they started implementing random events during my ride, I'd start teleporting. I use them because they're cheap and I can afk (or enjoy the scenery), I don't wanna be on my toes while I'm traveling, I use them to take a break.
I avoid teleporting whenever possible, with the exception of my free teleport. 500+ gil might not seem like a lot, but it does add up over time. That said, I think I'd be annoyed if I was forced to take a slow airship ride whenever I rode an airship - I'm definitely in favor of making this optional.
There are times I want a slow ride, to be sure. I love Chocobo Porters for this purpose. Very cheap, and riding them gives me a chance to get up, grab some food, go to the bathroom, whatever. I just wish porters were less limited in where they can go; it's annoying that a porter in, say, Southern Thanalan, can take you to another porter in SouThan or to Ul'dah, but won't take you to Drybone or Black Brush Station? And why can't the Drybone porter take you to Camp Tranquil? It's one zone away!
Porters should be able to take you to any town that you could get yourself while remaining mounted - so, basically, any town at all not on La Nocea if you're not in La Nocea, and any town in La Nocea if you are.
They could make the rides a full out PvP free for all area as well! Nothing greater then either dominating the ship or finding a place to hide in hopes of making it to the other side.
Side note: It's always an interesting social experiment when multiple players gather knowing the concept that if they all just sit quietly, then everyone can safely make it to the other side. And yet, there is a 99% chance that it will not work out that way by the time the boat reaches it's destination.
Yoshi-P once mentioned that they might make a FATE-type event on the airship, but it hasn't been mentioned in over a year now, so I assume it's been quietly dropped.
Sometimes I wonder why they're even there.
Maybe they'll give them more purpose when the expansion comes around.
They could implement this idea for the boat/airships and anyone that doesn't want to use them will STILL have teleportation available to them. And if they're feeling especially generous, they could reduce the price of teleporting from one city to another.

Q: Will trains, boat, and airships arrive and depart on a set timetable?
A: I touched on this earlier, but transportation will be as it was in 1.0, so players won't have to wait. However, there's a specific reason for why we're doing it this way. We'd like to make these rides more exciting. For example, a FATE might occur after players board an airship. If players have to wait just for the chance to participate, it might be a big letdown. Realistically speaking, we can only create this sort of content after we've implemented boat and airship rides. Another reason, and I'm very sorry for this, is that because the game was rebuilt so quickly, and with such high quality that, to create something that lets players view all these areas from above—something that would only be used for these transports—would be difficult at this time.
Also this one from 3 years ago

While the airships in 1.19 will feature cutscene-only, quick transport, there are future plans for being able to move around aboard the airship and enjoy the scenery while flying to your destinations. We are also planning on adding airship-related content, such as quests and other things to do.
For now, please enjoy airships as a method of transportation and look forward to what’s coming! ^_^
I really hope it is in the coming expansion pack at least.
I really miss the real time boat travel that was in the beta. I would LOVE them to bring this back. I know it's not everyone's cup-of-tea, but surely they could add the option either way and make everyone happy?
I hope there's a mark when The Hunts goes live that requires you to board an airship or ship and you get a random chance of finding the said mark. Deathgaze for airships and SIN for ships.
Uh, the ARR Beta never had a real-time ship, I think you're confusing the 1.0 Beta with it, unless you're thinking of the initial cutscene for Limsa Lominsa which had the player arrive on a ferry - the equivalent for Gridania and Ul'dah was a chocobo carriage.
But the reason why a rideable ship/airship hasn't been included is to do so would require a special zone to be created (the actual ship/airship), along with a sea/sky for the ship/airship to sail/fly through. And considering there's plenty of zones that are still waiting to be brought back from 1.0 (like the West Shroud, the majority of Coerthas, the southern half of Mor Dhona, etc etc), I'd rather those missing zones be returned before having a rideable airship that I'm likely to only take once in a while. But that's just me.
Honestly, it would be nice if there was a bit more traveling involved.... something to make the world feel alive. Too much standing in a city for my tastes.
The open world is just a lobby where you wait for dF to start. Quest are to easy to do so there no reason to ask questions or seek help. Exp parties are not needed so there is no reason to hang out with people you don't already know. Its as if all the social aspects of mmo's where remove from this game intentionally. Now we really have no reason to do anything but wait on df. If you don't watch a video before you enter the instance your not welcomed in it. Ffxi was a living world where things happened even if you weren't there. Like NM spawns, airships you had to group together just to survive. In this game nothing exist until you start it. Most of the world is locked away behind the duty finder. Anything that makes you wait is intolerable by the community. None of the nostalgic and memorable events of older mmo's can exist in this game because its just not made that way.
However I always liked traveling in FFXI.
There are times I want to be there now, and times I wanted to travel between towns and go afk for a few mins ie(washroom, Grab a drink).
Now people have no time for anything. I was running bray hard with my hubby he had to go AFK phone call. And people voted to kick the second he said AFK.
He was kicked, I quickly dropped.
It's really unfortunate. ;; Though at the least there needs to be an option for content like this. Afterall, people say they don't have any time to do things but they'll grind for their Novus weapons for sure.

Thank you for your feedback,
We have no plans to implement such a feature as players would likely experience stress from missing an airship, or having to wait for the ride to finish, or from seeing Eorzea from such an alarming height.
With stresses such as these, players may have difficulty visiting youtube in order to watch and memorize the gimmicks in the upcoming 2.3 endgame content. Success in these battles will earn players with revolutionary rewards, such as ilvl115 gear and more Tomes to buy other ilvl115 gear.
Please note that in patch 2.4 we are planning on more youtube gimmick fights and further revolutionary rewards, such as ilvl120 gear, and Tomes
Also, though this is not finalized, we will also be adding youtube gimmick fights in 2.5 with amazing ilvl125 gear, and Tomes.
And finally, we have a sneak preview of the long awaited 3.0 expansion update -- featuring all new youtube gimmick battles, ilvl130 gear, and Tomes!
Please look forward to it.
If they were to implement this,I think it should be like a mini-game (like the boat in Runescape, I forget the name). Disciple of Hand classes could repair the airship as it gets attacked. WVR/LTW on the sails, ARM/BSM/GSM could work on weapons that the airship uses to defends itself, as well as various defenses. CRP could repair the hull. Dunno about ALC or CUL.
DoW would use the cannons and general defenses of the ship
Dunno about DoL. I can come up with things, but they all seem a little iffy. Maybe they could dig through the storage of the ship for the various materials and ammunition the other two classes would need to properly do their jobs.
If you succeed, you reach your destiny safely and receive a reward for defending the airship, otherwise it drops you somewhere between where you started and where you were going.
But just adding long airship flights for the sake of long airship flights? Sounds a little unneeded. At least if they turn it into a kind of minigame that utilizes all of the various classes, it can give people new things to work together over. Personally, I would KILL to have content like this, something out of the norm from just killing things.
I dunno. Having a minigame you HAVE to do on the airship kinda defeats the point. A real time airship would give players the opportunity to have a short break.
I can take a short break in all kinds of places though. Any major city or anywhere with an Aetheryte is already safe to rest at. Chocobos actually serve as an airship of sorts between the smaller encampments as well. I just think if you were stuck on an airship for 10 or 15 minutes (or even more), it would get boring really fast, the feature would just completely die without some kind of incentive, which would just make it a waste of time for the dev team to even bother with.
I think it would be neat to look down on Eorzea from the sky and all, I just don't know how practical it would be in the long run, I feel like it's novelty would run out pretty fast.
We dunno what the FC airships will be like yet though, so who knows, those might give you exactly what you want!
