Not in America
It's considered a felony and or a minor crime in America in all 50 states.
However some places it is legal in;
Eritrea
Egypt (Up to 4 wives)
India (For Muslims Only)
Iran (Up to 4 wives)
Libya (Up to 4 wives)
Maldivies
Malaysia (Strict requirements)
Morocco (Muslims only)

I wanted to find some more information regarding polygamy and I found this interesting map:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Le...f_polygamy.png
It would seem that the majority of the world considers it either highly illegal or or you'll be so shunned that it may as well be. This is a completely different situation than bringing up your equal rights comparison to same sex eternal bonding. Given this kind of situation, SE would face a boat load more critism than they would for the same sex bonding. Given that, the chances of it happening is slim.
Why can't I dress in woman's clothes in the game? SE, you're denying your cross dressing audience privileges and excluding them from how they want to play the game!
Why can't I marry my chocobo? I've spent more time with him/her than with my FC! SE, you're denying your bestiality ...er, I mean animal loving audience privileges that other couples have and I can't play the game how I want!
Why haven't I been anal probed by aliens yet? It happens in real life, so it should be a real possibility in Eorzea! SE, you're spitting in the faces of all those you DON'T THINK have been abducted by aliens and making a mockery of us!
Shall I go on? Because when else is SE gonna cave to our absurd requests? No time like the present, as was stated earlier.
And don't judge me because you can't see it from MY point of view!
I want to be able to marry my Minions, or Eos. I demand equal rights. I love dem pets dammit!
While this is a good idea to make our other friends happy so you dont have to pick one and the other will be hurt. I can also see this as a epeen brag with how many partners you have.. Tough choice but ill have to hope this doesnt get implemented
while the Miqo'te lore fits "a bit" this idea, Eorzean's lore is more about :
=> prostitution
=> harems
For both of them, you do not need to marry them.
They have the ability to equally be lifelong friends with multiple people.
It is called the Friend List.
In my opinion, ploygamous ceremonies would open itself up to abuse in scheduling or behavior, particularly if the ceremonies are presided via GM.
I'm surprised, where did all the support for equal rights and choices go? I was under the assumption we were all about equality for everyone around here, and the freedom for game mechanics to support multiple lifestyles especially ones that are backed up by in-game lore.
I guess we're fine with some forms of equality while openly dismissing others :o
(I don't care either way but i love this thread)
Ive been waiting for a troll thread like this to pop up since the Anyone can marry anyone decision was made, as this is the classic response to the gay marriage issue, next we will probably see people who say they want to marry chocobos and should be able to because "reasons" related to the recent marriage decision.
I knew this was going to happen. Since this is happening, I suppose we should also have threads about custom emotes.
You know, private emotes you can only do with your eternal bonded friend of love. The kind that can only be done in an inn room or a private FC room... You know... that kind..
This is clearly not meant to be serious, but the thing is... when you do things like this you are openly taunting the decisions of the developers.
When you do that then they might look away from the English forums as a source of good feedback and relative suggestions.
What you are asking is to make the system have no restrictions, therefore rendering the point of the system completely void. So why have it at all?
Some of the responses here have been a lot of fun, but please do not forget to respect the developers.
^^ Some things are just better RPed anyways.
I must be really tired.
Could have sworn I just read a thread about polygamous marriage on the forums.
Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn already has Polygamy.
It's called Free Company.
And this further reinforce that SE should just drop the whole marriage/eternal bonding system. Because players will never be happy.
Ok, this thread is sickening and I'm honestly disappointed with my fellow gamers here on this one. This thread is nothing but a copy of what the right wing entertainment industry does on their radio shows to get the conservative population whipped into a frenzy. It goes like this, "If you allow gay marriage what next, Polygamy, bestiality, incest, pedophilia?" That makes this whole thread nothing but a troll as there is no reason for this thread other than to get people angry and get their blood pressure up.
Now some of you may be saying that there are real polygamists out there and want to frame this as a equal rights for them debate. Here's the problem, polygamy exists in two predominant groups that I know of, some branches of Islam and some excommunicated Morman sects. (There may be other religions but those are what I know of) In each of these the practice is that one man marries multiple women. This is inherently sexist. It is also very similar to Elliot Rodgers manifesto where he stated a desire to put all women in a camp for breeding purposes. So think very very carefully about what you are defending.
I'm very disappointed with this community on the forums with this thread.
And here we go! :D
You seem to be forgetting that Polyamory and Polysexuality are something that actually exists. While not all people who are Polyamorous / Polysexual wish to or even feel the need to form permanent lasting relationships with multiple partners (see: marriage) this doesn't mean that others may not wish to.
I find it interesting that now another form of rights and equality that ISN'T practiced world wide and only accepted within a few select groups that may not be your own is now an issue.
Or are you going to suggest that Polyamory / Polysexuality is a choice/preference and not inherent/genetic?
I think what most people who are making jokes/commenting in this thread are trying to point out is that if the argument is going to be made for equal opportunity for everyone then it should be made for everyone, the concept of equal rights is not a buffet plate that you can pick and chose from when you feel it's convenient or only applies to you.
I made clear before that i don't care about this as a game issue either way because well it's a game in the end, however i do find quite a few of the responses in this thread rather illuminating to be honest.
What a ridiculous request. You do realise that in some religions/countries it is not only legal, but general practice for an older man to marry an 8 year old girl? We call that paedophilia, next we're going to ask for equal rights for that!!! Just because a few (VERY few) people indulge in what is considered illegal in the majority of countries/religions in this world, does NOT make it ok to ask for. Role play your many husbands/wives, or just be a cat and have as many breeding females/males as you want....just like cats (you do realise that animals don't marry?) ;)

From Wikipedia:
Black = legalized
Gray = unknown
Light blue = illegal, but the law doesn't crack down on it
Dark blue = highly illegal and considered a criminal act punishable to the fullest extent of the law (varies by country)
Yea....no, I HIGHLY doubt SE would ever consider a "formal" addition in this game. Stick to your RP-made harems.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_s...f_polygamy.png
Nvm seems you edited out your original comment :D
While I completely support polygamy, I think restrictions would need to be put on in-game benefits. My first reaction is that people would start marrying/bonding with large groups just for the in-game benefits. And I think depending on the bonuses they give us, it could become like "Oh you're in our static? You have to marry/bond with all of us so we're all getting the same benefit."
Though if the only benefit is something like free teleports to someone you're bonded with, I support that.
Nunh have polygamist and inter-family sexual relationships (Father - Nunh, mating pool likely includes all sister/mothers of the Tribe; passes to sons -> Tia); Sunseekers are similar to lions - significantly inbreeding to root-out bad genes. A Nunh must either prove himself superior in combat or entice females away to have offspring. It can also be inferred that Tia that do not wish to become Nunh will seek alternatives - homosexual relationships or modern Eorzean relationships (marriage & monogamy homosexual or heterosexual).
Inter-species breeding is unclear - as of yet we (Adventurers) have not encountered any hybrids besides perhaps mixed-blood Garleans and the divergent Padjal (a sub-species of Hyur Midlanders).
Off-spring of mixed blood are likely possible but highly unlikely due to extremes of sexsiual dimorphism and adaptation among races; in example Roegadyn are very unlikely to comfortably maintain a healthy sexual relationship nor conceive a with a Hyur/Miqote/Lalafell without significant risks - Miqote females have significantly wider hips possibly because the likelihood of twins or triplets is higher among both Sunseekers & Moonkeepers.
Given this the foundation for the possibility of acceptable polygamy lies only with traditional tribal Sunseekers; female tribe members however are not bound by law only by an arrangement based in tradition. This tradition also implies that the Nunh of a tribe passes by combat, or by blood inheritance and must be approved of by a majority of the females in the tribe.
These principles withstanding I believe that it goes against the legality of an Eorzean Union to be shared among more than two individuals.
Amusingly this is my attitude toward the entire marriage system. And yet here we are.
Wail and gnash your teeth all you want. I don't believe for half a second that SE will actually do this and I have zero personal interest in any marriage system: straight, gay, poly, or otherwise. I'm just pointing out a rather blatant fact when I say that polygamy is already established in game. If there's anything disappointing about this thread it's the double standard being applied to equal rights. "Polygamy" is the greatest fear of the gay rights supporter, because they know it does even more than "traditional marriage" to undermine their cause. They get all indignant about being oppressed, then turn around and do the exact same thing to an even smaller minority because it serves their own self-interest.
Your thoughtless blanket statement here basically just ruled out gay marriage, too. Think more critically about your arguments to avoid giving the wrong impression.
You've got to be kidding me. That's essentially the entire Muslim world, covering more than 1.9 billion people and over 25% of the world's population. By comparison, the gay population in America is estimated to be less than 4%.
People in here are nuts...
Enough! Stop pulling on Yoshida's arm all the time.
You're acting like kids who absolutelly want their candy.
Well actually... serious OP or not there is a point to be made about the concept of marriage equality that the once vocal supporters are now mysteriously silent about.
The irony being pointed out is that after one group received what they considered "equality" they turned very quickly on the idea of a another group in a similar situation.
The idea that those who are Polyamorous / Polysexual are now ridiculous or asking for too much is quite shocking considering the number of threads and complaints that went up for months about the same sex issue. In fact this very thread joke or not was something that people were repeatedly warning others about when the issue first came up, that the game should not be a platform for political issues concerning equality especially if you aren't willing to take it all the way (haha yes i know).
To those who will propose the slippery slope argument that Pedophilia, Bestiality, etc etc are byproducts of this line of thinking i hope you are aware of the very clear distinction between relationships formed by sexual orientation and relationships formed by consent and understanding.
The issues of Pedophilia and Bestiality arise based on the fact that in those types of relationships only one of the partners has the mental facilities to actually consent to said relationship, it's why the age of consent laws actually vary from area to area:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of..._North_America.
You can see how this is massively different than a relationship formed by multiple consenting adults of legal age.
If anything the lesson to take away from this is to be very careful when asking for something to be added to the game while waving the banner of "Equal Rights For All!" without understanding what that truly entails.
I should make it clear that while i dont paticularly care about in game marriage i respect Yoshida's decision to add same sex partnerships to the game via the eternal bonding system and give credit to the entire FFXIV staff and Square-Enix for handling this charged topic quite gracefully, unfortunately the same cannot quite be said about the community.
Just to show that polygamy is already an existing system in this game (and while I don't think formal polygamy will be implemented, this information may be useful to those who choose to RP as typical Miqo'te):
Seekers of the Sun:
"Males do not take family names, as they are each considered the 'origins' of new families. In place of a family name, they are given a title that denotes their tribe, and their position within it. For a male Seeker of the Sun, there are only two positions available—breeding males (nunh – pronounced 'noon') and all others (tia – pronounced 'tea-ah'). All males are born as tia. At any time in their lives, a tia can challenge the tribe nunh to battle. If the tia is victorious, he takes the nunh's place as tribe breeding male (until he is challenged and defeated), and the nunh becomes a tia once again (if he survives the ordeal). This is done to ensure that the tribes offspring are of the finest stock. Depending on its size, a tribe may have multiple nunh (a ratio of one nunh per ten to fifty females is average).
There is only one other way a tia can become a nunh, and that is to leave his tribe, and start his own. This, of course, requires several females to accomplish, and most female Seekers of the Sun are rarely impressed by a male who cannot defeat a nunh. As all letters of the alphabet are already taken by the 26 original tribes, any new tribes founded by tia are named with a second letter, such as "Ma" (e.g. "Ma'shtola"). These tribes tend to die out due to the aforementioned lack of women.
Nunh status does not equate to leadership within a tribe, and in fact, very few nunh ever become leaders.
A female first name will always begin with the letter representing her tribe, followed by an apostrophe, and then her given name. Her last name is the first name of the tribe's breeding male who sired her."
Keepers of the Moon:
"Unlike the Seekers of the Sun, the Keepers of the Moon is a highly matriarchal society, with family names passed down from the mother, not the father. It is said that some of these surnames have survived since the First Astral Era.
The Keepers of the Moon lead more solitary lives, rarely forming communities of more than two or three families. Therefore, a tribal letter is not assigned to the names.
The matriarchal strength is further displayed by the fact that female first names are short, one/two syllable constructions that closely resemble names used by male Seekers of the Sun.
More evidence of how important the mother is to the Keepers of the Moon can be seen when looking at the names given to males. In addition to taking the mother's surname, males also take the mother's forename, adding a suffix (separated by an apostrophe) to the end to designate the order in which they were born."
All of this comes from the lore on how Miqo'Te name themselves;
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Miqo'te/Naming
You're right.
I didn't care about same sex marriage because this is a game.
Sadly some people are and think to much for their own good and tend to push small mater into the extreme.
Wanting "equal rights for all" in a game ? Well w-e.
I think people are too egoistic and absolutely want the game to go their way.
And that's what pisses me off.
I only hope SE will not yield to w-e demands players come to ask them.
The lore is very interesting, but there is a lot in there about sexual relationships, not actual marriage. Miqote behaviour is very similar to that of the animal kingdom (apart from humans). Animals don't have marriage ceremonies, they have multiple sexual relationships. Even those species which have one partner for life...don't "marry", that is a human thing and revolves purely round religion and in the case of non religious marriages, the law.
Just when you think you've seen it all. xD
in FFXI they had a application which I told my age in order to qualify or get on a list if I remember right.
Though people tend to take it serious and start to mess around in real life, if SE allows a youngster to marry a adult and then something happens a parent could sue SE.
The court would rule in the favor of the parent do the child does not have the power of say so yet, wouldn't matter if the parent wasn't paying attention either because they thought they were actually playing the game not messing around. not saying it will happen but it could.
Just looking out for SE's best interest here.
Oh and one more thing, if you don't believe that stuff happens, you ever seen the private chat locked rooms on FFXI private chat servers, the titles asking for young people and only room for 2 this stuff happened lots there when maintenance happened.
Precisely - hence the "it's based in tradition" and never bringing marriage up except to say that an Eorzean Union is likely only legally recognized if it's between two individuals...
I think Eorzea is a pretty interesting place. I'm excited to see more of the greater world.
