When doing something as big as this (even though you can technically do it solo) it's always best to have a buddy or 2 for back up. You never know when something is going to bite you in the arse!

So thanks to 2.3 The Hunt's and the month I took off the game before it, I now have my Novus. Shield and Sword :) Was very expensive. The Hunt made it an Easy myth grind, and as per-some very sound advice I always took a friend with me.
OP. Ya know.. I feel your pain. I really do.
I went through this. I actually was soloing the alexandrite maps for my first 4-5, and then I got one (the one with the Biclops) and while it was close, I died. I died completely, and there really wasn't much I could do about it. I lost that Map.
And then I made a decision. Because I wanted to get my Novus and never lose another Alexandrite I would always have the help of at least one other person to compliment me and preferably also help them with their alexandrite maps as well.
I don't solo maps anymore and haven't now for a long while. I've never lost another map, and I'm now 72/75 on my Novus.
Get a friend or friends to help you. Offer to help them in exchange if you can. I prefer to seek out people with their own maps, it makes the whole thing so much easier when there's more people and everybody wins.
I soloed 99% of my maps. Only lost one out of 75
The map with the golem and the bombs was changed with 2.3, now you can see when the bombs spawn.
I'm halfway my Novus, though I still laugh at people's responses here, blaming others for not partying up for maps meant to be solo (you see that 1 when you decipher the map?).
I guess one day they will find a cure for autism.
I got my Novus last night. Felt wonderful!
I'm curious, though - does anyone know if doing fates with a Novus has a chance to drop a rare item? Like Atma with Zenith, or Alexandrite with Animus?
This is how alex maps work. I feel your pain, I remember vividly the 2 maps I lost because I had to solo them. We should never solo these maps, even if we can, we shouldn't, they are too important.
Haha, those bomb adds took me by surprise as well first time I had to fight the Golem on my Warrior. Although I was pissed for losing an Alexandrite, I laughed about it and I was much prepared the next battles I had with it. I soloed all of the maps I had and only lost to that one time. You move on and learn your mistake.
I almost lost one the other day. while I was doing on at a really late hour like 2pm GMT so I thought i would solo it with being i102, I almost died if it wasn't for a very kind healer passing by that healed me when i was at 100hp.
The main problem with Novus now is the price of materia. I consider myself a rich player and I am simply not prepared to spend 10 million gil on tier 4 materia to get my Novus, it's not worth it. I imagine the time involved in earning that 10 million back is far more than farming a sands of time via hunts to upgrade a weathered soldiery weapon to i110. So I will likely sit with 75 alexandrite until the upgrade is worth doing.
500-800k? Crazy. They're "only" 400-450k or so on Ragnarok and it's only going up. I can see SE doing something about materia acquisition because a lot of people are about to get into tier 4 range from doing dailies and they're going to get pissed and complain. Surprised they didn't do anything in 2.3.
I enjoyed the danger the maps gave. It was one of the saving graces to the novus grind imo.
Also hahahahaha @ the conversation about materia prices. Prices for the high demand materia on my server jump around too. I finished my novus awhile back, but I bought my DET materia from somewhere between 100k-350k each. Right now they're 500k+ on my server and steadily going up.
People who don't have millions of gil at their disposal will end up getting all of their alexandrine long before getting enough materia(including backup for fails). With that in mind I don't what the big deal is with loosing out on a map or two in order to learn amusing mechanics.
I was referring to those players that sit on 22+million gil and don't spend it then put up materia for this obscene price, which I looked at DET IV is now 700k - 1million and Crit is 700 - 800k, those prices will turn players away from doing it, Yes you can spiritbond but most people dont want to do it as they dont like the RNG that comes with it and after Atma grind i want little RNG as possible haha.
Get a few items SB them (lvl 50 abv) to 100%, convert it to get ur Materia IV.

But conversion is rng...
esti ard 3-4 dungeon runs, shd get e item SB@100%.
Item will indicate whether its convertible or not.
Hence u see players trying to earn our hard earn gil!!!

Such materia prices are discouraging gameplay... SE shd sell materia by M-tomes
1) While it's true that most of the chest monsters do not require a certain class, there are a few that are difficult for a non-tank to attempt. The key here is that you can't predict which one will spawn. There is this one spawn where it's a cyclops with a horde of mobs that simply shoot you down. That one is nearly impossible to solo.
2) The hunt craze will often preclude easy access to a group that's willing to do chests with you.
3) Spiritbinding will often yield the wrong materia, and always takes a long time to grind. The right ones on the other hand cost a fortune.
4) Alexandrites can be farmed easily if you get lots of myths from doing hunts. Hunts are frustrating, but at least you'd be doing two things at once (getting both sands and alexandrite).
5) If you aren't at the Novos stage yet at the start of 2.3, be very careful about investing in this project. Both the Atma and Animus phases require activities that compete with the Hunts for your attention and time.
the mechanic is getting killed in one hit is the gearscore method. reason we dont get anything worth while is because people cried & moaned in beta they only have limited time to play and if anything last more then 10 secs its too long. they dont have time for MMO's so we get garbage content lol. SE is just giving us trash versions of FFXI content now
one reason i sub for only one month per patch to see if its gets any better. usually get bored after two weeks.
No thanks, I can probably earn the 450k to buy the materia faster than I can spirit bind it. As you say, RNG. I don't have a shortage of gil anyway, I just don't feel the upgrade is worth the cost when far cheaper alternatives exist. Why spend 10 million on this when you can spam hunts for 15 hours and get a sand?
