Well...it is a lot of fun to heal. Can be stressful at time, but it's a good stress. You have peoples' lives in your hands.
Another reason? If someone angers you, you can let them eat dirt as payback :p

I think my favorite part of healing, as a scholar at least, is it lets me (well...forces me) to have a bird's eye view of the battle. I don't need to crowd control or worry about maintaing rotations and damage numbers. I'm the tactician. Filling in gaps, catching falling balloons, thinking 5 steps ahead. For me healing is all about strategy and "big picture" ideas. Thats fun. Most of the time. Other times I just wanna blow shit up.
I'm kind of surprised by the "Harder than DPS'ing" comments. I've always been really intimidated by DPS'ing, and hopped on the SCH train as soon as I hit 30 ACN. Keeping track of cooldowns, maintaining a proper rotation, and micromanaging Garuda is way more difficult for me. Especially over an exended period of time. I'll often just panic and flub it and struggle to recover.
As a SCH, I really only have to manage Aetherflow stacks and watch HP bars. And control Eos, but that's only a couple buttons, and you don't use most of them just because they're up. I get to decide when's best. If I do something silly in Cleric Stance mode, like forget to Shadowflare, or Miasma II, or something, it's not a big deal 'cause any damage I'm doing is just a nice bonus.
I've tried tanking. It seems like the easiest of the three roles, but I turn into a controlling psycho-bitch when I'm leading the pack. I always walk away hating everyone and everything they do "wrong." Like, stand in front of me. At any point, ever, for any reason. Or run ahead. I take offense. I will *walk* to the next pack of mobs. If someone face-pulls, I just stand there and watch. I didn't make it very far.
So, uh, I guess I've been healing 'cause it's the only job that doesn't make me a neurotic mess, or a shortfuse. :D
I heal because nobody else will do it. lol
This, for the most part. I have all jobs leveled to 50 but I did all of the DPS first and got kind of bored with running everything as a DPS. I don't think I'm cut out to be a tank, so healer's the other option. At first I was really intimidated by healing, but I had it leveled and ended up helping other people out doing dungeons and gradually got pretty comfortable with it. Now it's my second favorite job. ^_^
fast qeue times
Haha...I will admit, I havent let someone die but I did a dungeon once with a very arrogant tank who was telling the DPS to shut up and do as he says, he's the tank so he leads the run...I let him hover right around 20% hp and kept chain on that, didnt follow ahead if he was rude to make him sweat, just to let him know who's REALLY in charge of the run.
To me its fun and different from DPSing. I also get to see things from the healer's point of view and because of that I respect them alot more. Especially ones that have their Relic. Them Titan stomps were scary. Also.. I love the pretty WHM outfit on my character. xD
the main reason for me is because only healers can make the party recover or comeback from a mess.
for the most part (keyword: "most) of the endgame contents
1) DPS can die, yes we can still recover provided we have enough dps on the dps check
2) Tanks, well basically they could die, provided you have a OT or could kite around a little
3) but a healer should/could never die, yes there is a second healer and a lot of contents can be solo healed. but in keeping everyone alive they have a more higher priority to live
but the feeling when a lot of shit mess up or not going according to plan (someone dc,lagging) healers are the one who will need to improvise, they are the one in charge to bring the momentum back on their phase and regain control of a losing battle.
the feeling of winning/clearing a run after a lot of fked up or mess up moments and multiple deaths is the best feeling and why i stay as a healer.
Why do I heal?
For cure. I was in both 1.0 and 2.0 alpha and beta. Learned that it was a very good idea to at least have Cure I when low level DPS grinding. Started CNJ to have Cure I on my road to BRD. Never did that though. Just kept playing CNJ... then WHM. Just kept going to 50. Granted over time DPS invites REALLY started dropping off in dungeons (I **HATE** FATE's) so that did keep me on the WHM train. Actually started liking the job over time. Still like it. I find DPS brain dead boring and I do not "get" tanking in this game despite doing it for 7 years in FFXI. I also like having some control over the party.
The feel when you realize you hold the life of your party members in the palm of your hands... c:
I hate dying.
It's also more fun than DPSing if there are multiple damage sources being thrown at the party.
I heal because i do not like other people to decide whether i die or live :P
Because I don't trust someone else to keep me alive ^_^
No other role dictates whether a dungeon run will be successful as much as the healer.
The feeling when you make a mistake and it causes a wipe sucks.
The feeling you get when things are going very badly and you manage to heal through the mess and come out successful is fantastic.
The rest of the group may not even realize how close they were to wiping but you do and it feels great.
When things are going badly and you are tanking you are completely at the mercy of the healer to pull you through.
When things are gong badly and you are DPS you pretty much just keep pushing 1-2-3-1-2-3 until the tank/healer pull through, or you die.
Healing keeps me on my toes. Balancing everything to keep my tanks alive and watch everyone's back, looking for opportunities to toss an aero without losing pace on cures~ It's fun!
Que is shorter for roulettes and sometimes it's relaxing and I also do it to help others.
for me it all started with swtor (which I still play) before that tho I would always play dps. but in swtor when u play as the mercenary class u can play as a healer with dual pistols and u basically shoot your allies to heal them...with green bullets! I thought that was an interesting way of healing, shooting your teammates in the back to heal haha
i really came to enjoy healing in swtor and stuck with it ever since. when ff14 came out i knew i wanted to be healer from day 1. not the same as shooting your teammates with dual pistols but still awesome.
Because it makes me being a desired person to be around and such things gets me all warm and tingly at my ego.
Oh, and shorter queue times.
Because... I'm not particularly good at it? Seriously, once I started getting into the later 40s and sh** got real, I began building up anxiety when healing new contents. It's fun, and I have some feeling of accomplishment when I started hitting my stride as WHM. Recently picked up the mortarboard and... Whew, there's that old familiar feeling again. I love when groups come together and work well, and healing feels central to that cooperation.
Someone once cutely pointed out that for Healers, the DPS and tank are just minions he/she sends out to do battle for them
This is my first time healing anything. I wanted to try it because my friend said I might enjoy it, and I actually do. It gets stressful and painful, but nothing beats clearing content knowing you did your role well and helped others give 100%.
I can't say I always enjoy it, but I frankly don't enjoy being a dedicated dps and have zero sense of direction so can't tank either :x
Mainly out of demand, used to be a DPS, but since our FC already had so many, I went Scholar.
Healing is okay, being able to recover from a tight spot and managing to save the day makes me feel good, but I still prefer hitting things.
I play all jobs to be good at them all for for the variety of roles, ATM I enjoy SCH over WHM because doing stuff like brayflox's longstop hard with the massive pulls I find SCH to be easier that WHM and also easier to DPS when small pull and boss fights.
To break out of rotation. Too much DPS role depends on circling over a certain rotation for max dps in my opinion. And since SE ruined the DPS class for me (mostly the fast pace executed poorly (old battle system back for lyfe!)), it's what I now enjoy the most.
I like playing Scholar because I have so much different things to do.
Last night we were doing T8 and on that fight I am in charge of leeching the tank from diffusion ray, keeping an eye on AOE tower and making sure sacred soil is up, Succor is casted right before and Fey Covenant is on all. Then Fey Illumination>Whispering Dawn while at the same time cast more succor, adlo tank and more leeching. Virus dreadnaught and eye4eye on tank, cast a few debuffs and keep eye on Ballistic missiles... If I for once turned away from my screen everyone would be dead.
Healers are the most important members of the team, if healer goes down, shortly after everyone will.
That and also:
I like to play healer because it's much more relaxing than the two other classes. You can do your job just fine without worrying to keep up time-limited rotations or combos. As a main BLM, I sure do enjoy the break playing healer gives me XD.
I usually play mage classes in MMORPG.
Black mage is my favorite class (I plays BLM for years in XI), however this game pretty much raped the "classic" concept of Black Mage, there is no difference between it and another DPS, they all feel the same. Scholar is the only job I feel offers something else in term of mechanics, I'm not a fan of healing itself, but I love how the job plays.
Also fast queue.
Eos does all the work, the queue is fast, and generally i can just glance at my feet and party health bars and do any content.
Sch is stupid easy to do well and not pay attention.
1st mmo = 1st time healing
Loved it, felt like no reason to level other DoW/DoM classes to 50.
Went in at launch thinking i shall help people and heal them.
But it soon gradually turned into me being able to solo content and carrying others.
Dunno y it ended up like that, probably it's cuz i'm stuck in the end game community section.
So everyone i almost stumble upon to knows everything and has done like everything to an extent.
So because of that i kinda stopped caring for ppl's well beings lol and just throw HoTs around and barely solo target heal non tank classes.
Came into this game with a good intention but now it's like meh.. Your fault for not avoiding that.
I mained Black Mage until the end of 2.1, but at that time, the class just seemed very repetitive in what I was doing which was virtually the same rotation in every fight, so that got very stale to me. Realising I had a 50 White Mage since September, I decided to try healing out more seriously in endgame dungeons and coil and I absolutely loved it, so now my main is a White Mage and I have no regrets.
I like the feeling of responsibility I have to keep everyone alive and also I enjoy the challenge when a battle gets stressful damage-wise (I'm looking at you turn 8) to ensure that no-one drops after those big hits.
To be honest, I have no freaking idea.
If RDM had been one of the primary jobs I would've picked that instead. I guess I chose WHM because I wanted to be auto sufficient and not rely on other people for raise and cures. o.O I ended up not being bored playing WHM so there's that. I remember in beta I tried Archer and while at first fun, I got bored of it really fast. I recently finished leveling WAR and while challenging for me since I've never played a tank, it's the challenge that makes it fun. :) I am now currently leveling a DD job to have variety and while I loved SMN in FF11, in 14 I do not. Though, I leveled it just for the love for SMN, however it got a bit boring for me and I put it on halt. I'm trying DRG to see if I like the job, and so far it's been fun. I might give SMN another chance too. But anyways I got off-topic too much. lol
For myself. Hard to say.
I've played a healer since the old days of Ultima Online and Everquest 1 so .. hard to break the habit. I've always enjoyed the healing aspect. Always felt a nice rush when things go south and yet somehow we all manage to survive just due to some good healing :) (such as first time solo healing HM Titan.. that was a massive rush). It's one of the few aspects in a game that I'm good at.
Like others have said, it's fun!
I sub SCH and it really offers a different perspective on any dungeon than when I run them as BLM.
I also get to learn how the different classes are affected by their abilities or mob's attacks in dungeons. (For example, if healing, I prefer a PLD tank; if dpsing, I prefer WAR. :p)
Plus, macros are fun!
I decided to heal in this MMO because I have been raiding as a dps & a tank for years. I wanted a change and it was worth it! Gives me the rush being a dps and a tank used to.
