Sounds like Guns of Icarus.

i'm guessing he was refferring to the buildable airships he hinted about in the past. most likely rquired to advance further into the story an reach the new endgame content areas of said expansion pack.
Well assuming a Personal Air-ship will be required to progress in the storyline most likely a part of 1st expansion may have quests involving us to gather materials to create our Default Personal Air-ship while other type of Air-ship design must be create through Crafters and other means.
While it maybe questioned why bother making other designs of Air-ships if a default Air-ships is given through story quest and they are only for accessing new areas and content, creating unique and different type of Air-ships for our character will simply for fun and Vanity like Housing.
I'm certain Yoshi said in an interview that PS3 limitations meant no flying mounts.
If they did go with flying mounts, I want a goobbue flying via a propeller beanie hat, while my character hangs on to one of its legs.
Well if it does involve getting our own Air-ships then Air-ships will not be a mount but a required item to access certain places.
Current info has shown that any unique Air-ship can be built in Personal housing or FC Housing and there were some mention for Air-ship serving some important purpose for future contents. There could be other methods to build Air-ships but so far Yoshi-P only announced that Certain Air-ships are built through Housing such as the FC Air-ships requiring FC Housing.
So far Air-ships appear to sound similar to Housing but will be used to access certain contents.
There are actually solutions for flying mounts on PS3 fairly easily.
- make them special zones only (like, dungeons or maybe one or two regions only)
- stop PS3 support (while this is highly unlikely for the 1st expansion I think I've read somewhere that they will maybe abandon the PS3 version at some point in the future)
Also it doesn't need to be Flying mounts. Maybe it's just Flying travelling (like with the chocobos that bring you to a certain place for 20-100 Gil) that transport you to a zone in the sky.
The expansion will have you creating airships and traveling to far away lands not normally accessible.
I think this is going to refer to "flying" as in an airship. Since they've already mentioned us building them in our Fc houses and what not. It's logically the next step!
Imagine Fighting a primal after jumping out of an exploding airship, pluging 30000ft down to the ground with burning wreckage around you.
Serious SE make it happen!
Flying mounts? Do not want.
It won't involve flying or whatever people are thinking. I've said from the start the most logical place to expand is in to Ishgard. Land of dragon battles, airships and the like. There won't be no flying mounts because SE have already confirmed as much.
No flying mount, i rather decorate my airship with cannons and pretend to be Sky pirate ... scrap sky pirate ... Sky samurai !
Not really sure what to think of it, the zones are too small to really fly over them. There would have to be another overworld zone that would look down upon all the other zones for it to make since. These zones would have to be mostly for transportation purposes or it would just look silly having a bunch of FC airships hanging around.
I can see a bunch of stuff like Ishgard and different zones alike being chained to the ground and taking an elevator or paid flying mount that would transport you to said zone.
Whatever it is, I just hope we are able to look down and see the world from the sky and not have a bunch of clouds that never go away blocking our view!
When I saw "Flying", there were two things I immediately thought of.
1) Airships.
2) Floating continents.
I'd LOVE to see something like VI's floating continent or XI's Riverne areas (In terms of "what a sight to behold").
I hope theyrip offtake inspiration from Star Trek Online's ship travel (with personal Airships): 3-dimensional movement with acceleration/deceleration, aerial ranged combat, flying around/through environmental hazards, and overworld travel (visiting icons of the cities and aetherytes to land).
Can't spell flying without lying.
:^)
really lame.. mmos ALWAYS do flying crap. should have done underwater, u hardly ever see that in mmos.
Because when you go deep into the sea all you can do is hit Rock Bottom. But when he go into the sky you can Pierce the Heavens!:p
On topic:
If we are getting Air-Ship in 1st expansion I hope they do have plenty of unique customization or design choices. I've been interested in how they will handle creating Air-Ships since they announce part of Personal and FC Housing function will be to crafts Air-ships.
Air-ship functions is a simple guess that Air-ships maybe required to access certain contents that can't be accessed through ground areas like floating Castles, locations, dungeons, and etc. There maybe a point in 1st expansion story where we will use our Personal Air-ship to access story instances and to progress the storyline.
If FF 14 had WORLD PVP, then absolutely flying mounts shouldn't be added to the game. In reality, we have a game that poses no threat to grounded mounted players, so adding flying mouts shouldn't be that big of a deal.
You know think about it a bit now a Sky theme expansion would suit a lot more than just a method to fight the Dragons in Ishgard.
Don't forget the Garlean Empire still remains the most powerful Civilization in FF14ARR world because of their Air-ship armada that has allowed them to dominate countless Nations. However, if the War of Succession ends before 1st expansion storyline or during 1st expansion storyline we may see a Full Scale Garlean Air-ship Armada Invasion in 1st expansion storyline because of the new Garlean Emperor.
The only reason why Gaius didn't have a full scale Air-ship Armada on his side in 2.0 was because of the War of Succession happening in the Garlean Empire.
This would mean the City-State Alliance will need to develop their own Air-ship Armada to counter the Garlean Air-ship Armada or else we will lose the War in 1st Expansion if the story escolates this far.
We will most likely see a recreation this event for the Ishgard part of 1st expansion storyline

and then a FF14 version of this as we fight to retake Ala Mhigo or invade the Garlean Empire....

The reference to flying OBVIOUSLY means that it's going to be a Bravely Default crossover expansion.
Y'know, this actually makes an incredible amount of sense all things considered. Why would we finally be able to get our own Airships? The Grand Companies lack an airship fleet of their own, and so they commission the various free companies and independent adventurers to build and man Airships to attack the Garlean airfleet. In short? We'll all be Sky Pirates, furnished with our own Letters of Marque. Now I'm REALLY looking forward to when we get to build our own airships~.
please, no flying mounts.
Eh, honestly, I actually thought it was pretty cool myself. It felt like one of the more interesting sets of zones they introduced in Cataclysm, though it was somewhat annoying that the special mount you got for that zone wasn't usable anywhere else. Regardless, I'm sure that if Yoshi-P ever gives us underwater zones, he'll find an interesting method to do it.
I remember reading somewhere from developers that Free Company houses could build workshops for creating airships.
I may be going crazy though, can anyone confirm this?
They are likely referring to the airships we'll be able to make, though Yoshi-P once also said that he was considering adding -actual- flying mounts when there the opportunity would present itself (he mentioned "such as moving from a continent to another" if I remember correctly).
Hmm? I thought it was pretty cool, and I don't remember anyone really hating it.
Though it was really just one unique zone and that was it. Flying completely changed transportation in the game.
But anyways, I'm not sure if I'd like flying or not. In WoW, it's really hard to enjoy the scenery when you're just flying from point A to point B. It feels more immersive when you're on the ground in my opinion.
It was back in a patch note when Yoshi-P discussed about Housing Functions. (He also mentioned Chocobo Raising in it as well)
Housing will serve as a location to create Air-ships as he stated. However, SE may also release a Default location outside of Housing to craft our Air-ships as well and the Garlond Ironworks HQ would be a interesting place for players who do not own a House.
However, right now the little info we have is that Housing can be a location to create Air-ships and that Crafting other type of Air-ships will simply for Vanity use while the Size of the Air-ship (FC size Air-ships) will hold more important role for some kind of unknown content.
On another note:
Can't people think of anything else other than Flying Mounts? FF14ARR has plenty of other things involving the word Flying right now that we can't explore yet.
Ah well, as of now the word Flying could be just the Theme of 1st expansion being that the game may focus on things involving Air-Ships which is promised by Yoshi-P and to serve for some important unknown function.
Now SE just needs to release Musketeer and we will have some Balthier clones in this game to go with Air-ships.
That's because of the whole "fad" that goes with it. Not that it's a bad thing but it's hard to keep people interested in water stuff.
If we had submarines and content equivalent that keeps it interesting then maybe but it's the reason why it gets out done by sky content. It's just easier to access and across existing and progressive content and Airships and Sky continents will be more enjoyable and have better use than submarines, boats, ships, and other underwater related content.
I'd look forward to underwater but I ain't holding my breath on expecting the FFXIV making the most out of it for me to enjoy from an expansion. I'd place my hopes on dungeons and raid content that has underwater themes.
Sky dungeon gimme my sky and sea gods back
