If gear X is essentially required in order to go for gear Y, how is gear X obsolete?

The moment when the majority of the player base no longer requires it, it becomes functionally obsolete.
For instance. Let us consider two players. The noob and the established player.
Noob: Just hit 50 and needs to upgrade past his AF gear. Runs dungeons to get ilv 55 and 60 pieces while saving philo for darklight. For a time these pieces are necessary and useful until i70 darklight is obtained.
Established Player: Just reached 50 on my second job. Instantly equiped i70. All that i55 and i60 gear it utterly useless.
Pretty soon, with 2.2, the myth cap is going to be raised. The established player will soon be: just reached 50 on third+ job, equiped full i90 from myth farming. I80 and below is now utterly useless which now means CT is useless as well.
Useless for that player that already geared up one or two jobs already and have the ability to farm to gear up further jobs, and have already spammed the old content plenty of times...
Useful for that player that still need to gear up and cant farm higher gear yet...
The majority of the player base belong to the second case...
Let's put it this way:
DL Gear best gear you could get in 1.x, in ARR? First set of true End-game gear, Labyrinth of Ancients rolls around, that gear obsoleted the hell out of Darklight gear. It's only "required" because it's the last set of gear and once you get that new gear the old 'required' gear is obsolete. That's the design Yoshi himself said he was going for with this game.
I expect more open world content fit for a small party. The freedoms that would offer an incentive to go outdoors and make friends :)
My wish would be for an easier way to build community with players on the field so I would care to remember their names!
Moar crafted gear so I can craft it, sell it and buy a personal big house :O
Probably in this FF the labyrinth is under CT cuz when u battle archeon u see a window with sun :D
But in FF3 u see the labyrinth surrounding the tower; acting like a wall. ( hence y they kept the lava and brown tilings in there )
So i guess in this FF, LotA is part of CT.
Because FCs, uncapped myth, and knowledge of the game happened.
Also cuz ppl r taking X out of the equation.
Too bad the i80 CT gear only lived for oh so long. X) y did yoshi waste his time making this if 2.2 was coming up in a few months? Just to keep ppl hooked, make lives easier, and to make DL obsolete and reduce it to a variable. Hopefully coil gear will be designed better cuz the whole bronze brown white black look is getting odd.
Like realllllllllly odd when the allagan weapons are black and neon blue, which strangely only matches the dragoon myth gear.
Like wtf SE, might aswell make everyone look like the coil tilings rather than brown poop.
Because coil drop are poopie rng if even you can get into coil.
2.1 is basically 2.0 for the masses. CT and myth up bridge the gap. Half the bone breaking strats in 2.0 don't apply in 2.1 because the gear went from i73 to i80 average for turn 1 and i80+ for turn 4.
It's good in that 2.0 players are still in their l33t selves and 2.1 people don't feel like they need to be punished for not being in 2.0.
Doing turn1 in 2.0 was brutal, turn 4 was an impossibility for most unless you were lucky in coil. Roll along 2.1, and turn1 is just intro brute force, and turn 4 was the the turn1 of 2.1 days.
If 2.2 is a reset of 2.0, then very few people won't again be able to down turn 6-8 in a while before we hit 2.3 and then 6-8 becomes the standard bar.
there's nothing bad per-se as long as it keeps people busy. Right now it's stretched thin, but one can say winter isn't the fastest development times. If they can shorten it to 2-2.5month of the content we saw in 2.1, then it's golden.
They will have to pull up a surprise like ultima HM to keep people busy enough till 2.3 at this rate.
I would be extremely disappointed if we don't get the Golden Saucer in 2.3. I've been waiting since launch for it and it will take a year! (I remember before launch that Yoshi said the Golden Saucer would be implemented 3 months after launch) 3 MONTHS NOT ONE YEAR AFTER LAUNCH!
Stop playing with our feelings Yoshi...
I am with you LadyZola, I have been waiting for The Gold Saucer the very second Yoshi mentioned it would be coming. Saving 5m gil just to play XD
As a long time Eve player, I know all too well the heartache that comes with flying/playing the FOTM :P.
I always got around it by not caring what others did and just played what I like. It's part of the reason I never got any primal weapons in 1.0, or even tried Garuda in 1.0. No one wanted a Monk, and it was the only class I had.
Actually still is.
I'm more worried at the first possibility though. We've all hyped it up so long now, it might not be able to stand up to what we think.
2 new beast quest
CT plant 2 for ilv100 gears and weekly lock out
Ultima EX
A new primal HM/EX for ilv110 weapon
ilv110 PvP gears, +6 resist materias
UI upgrade
more side story...
oh.....I am done with 2.2 if this is true....
"White Raven" as a flashback battle.
I would like personal housing and the inclusion of Chocobo overhaul. So that means better control, better skills, reset function, breeding, stables and more barding.
Golden Saucer, individual housing, farming, Frontlines hopefully for 2.3
I am guessing two hard modes based on old dungeons, 1 new dungeon, 1 new primal, and some CT. It's been very formulaic so far and I don't see it changing
I am hoping for personal housing but I am sure it's gonna be delayed even further
Yoshi-p, in a latest interview, said there will be a new raid dungeon in 2.3. So it could be a new 'Castrum' dungeon as well, we have different ones around Eorzea after all (Castrum Marinum could be the chosen one)... who knows.
