I think my client crashed at LEAST 20 times a day while playing. Usually during leves too which was really annoying -_-.

I started playing since Open Beta, if that counts...Since you said your first time playing it. Anyway, I've seen some major improvements here and there since those open beta days.
With 1.20 coming soon, does anybody one wants to pitch in their memories ^^;;
Yes...I remember when this thread was created 5 months ago. Those were good times.
You love your threads too much. Let them die in peace.
I remember trying so hard to level up with groups as a CNJ who had to compete with other healers in order to gain SP. I spent so much time exploring that Fatigue was never an issue for me in the early days.
I started as botanist... I remembered my first cutscene and I was shocked to find myself in a battle situation... How was I supposed to deal with this?! Wait... I throw a rock at it?! oh ok... lol lame...
First thing I did was go out and chop some trees. Then I did some chop tree leves.
Groovy man... groovy.
I was totally confused.
I started out in Gridania as a cute little Lalafell CON, watched a beautiful cutscene...and suddenly was thrown into a battle without any tutorial.
It was horrible, and I nearly died xD
I thought it would be a good idea to play in English (so I would know the names of things when talking to English speaking players) but I realized soon I didn't understand a word of what the NPCs were saying in their weird Old-English..x-X
So I shut down the game after a few minutes and returned to my language.
wow the last couple of posts are hilarious
I remember getting into knife fights with my UI & exe. I'd try to sell things and it would be like "would you like to sell this?" /yes, "you are about to sell this item are you sure" /yes, "this item is about to be sold are you sure?" /YES, "you will no longer possess this item being sold are sure?" /YES BITCH!! "Final Fantasy XIV Has Stopped Responding" /trollface -_-
That was most of my experience right there, I had gotten the collectors version even after playing the beta, you could probably say I was in denial for a while. But they made the game free to play so it was money well spent as Yoshi slowly fixed all these silly mistakes, still is and hope it only gets better.
the first time i played was beta, i waited 2 moths to pay for them game which was a great decision because i got it for $30.00. i waited because i knew it needed some patching, lol. boy was that an understatement.
also i remember getting 0 xp for killing mobs way over my lvl. i had a hard time figuring out why that was.
I remember the first week I would Teleport from Ul'dah to Camp Black Brush and vice versa.
^Lol ha ha ha, everybody used up their anima
I remember being over the moon being invited to the 1st alpha testing. I got the email when I could play it (If I remember correct USA, EU and JPN had different time slots when you were able to play), luckily it was in the evening for me, as I probably would have taken time off work for it if it had been during the day.
I downloaded the client (and got access to the the alpha testers only forum - woot). First, Second, Third attempt... I couldn't log on, I kept getting some error message due to so many people trying to log on at the same time. I tried for over an hour to log on and then the time slot for EU was almost over so I gave up /cry.
I tried again a few days later and couldn't log on AT ALL ever!
I decided to give up as I had been reading the forums, that most people didn't get past the character creation screen anyway.
Then about a month later I tried again and YAY was able to make a character, Lalafel called Pixie Dust. The whole scene at the boat was SO LAGGY that it was hard to follow what was happening and when I finally got control of my character I moved maybe 1 step in 10 seconds. I don't know where I got the patience but I managed to get my character out of the boat and there it happened (every single time!) FFXIV crashed and it would not go anywhere from the boat. That was as much alpha testing I got and I was gutted. I knew my laptop wasn't the best so it probably needed upgrading for such high end game.
I gave my alpha account to my friend who had similar experiences and decided that I wouldn't try again until I had a new PC. It was already August 2010 when I then bought me a new computer and was able to try BETA with proper graphics and no lag.
I remember going to the market wards and it was EMPTY, I didn't know what the area was for. I also remember griding rats outside LL and I did not know what a levequest was until I bought the game and watched the opening movie.
Then the big day came, CE was out and I took 3 days off from work to get a proper kick start to FFXIV. I went to the gameshop at 9am when it opened just to find out that they hadn't received their delivery yet. So.. I was hovering around the store for 3 hours (!!) until I got the game.
I first created a Mi'qote and I ran around the whole world in the first few weeks. I had all the crystals, including the really difficult ones in Mor Dhona (I still have the character and now I wonder how on earth I ever got to these places as lvl 12!).
I also remember having a go at my friend who was leveling a pugilist for getting more SP than me who was playing a thaumaturge and he ended up on some fights just standing in the back while I casted spells so I would also get some skill points lol
Oh and do you remember when there was that clitch in the game that you would engage a mob and then suddenly the game would say that you cant attack that mob?
I got very fed up with FFXIV in only about two weeks and after that have played the game very on and off. I did make some friends in the few weeks of FFXIV though who have never come back, I wish they would because back then I did still feel a bit excited about the whole community.
Well, i started in Gridania (was a different character), did the first quest and went out to get camps...my first day was entirely spent getting most camps.
Then i went to do a thing i like the most in this game...gathering!
Ah, the good old days...you guys have no idea how i miss the original game...most of my good memories are stuck at that announcement of new hairstyles, party craft leves and hamlet defense...before the "dark cloud of mediocrity" engulf Eorzea and start rotting every aspect of it...
I want my FFXIV back... ; ;
@mamba I feel the same as you regarding old friends, when you buy the CE you basically know everybody during that first few week!
But, another thing, everything had horrid experience with you first play FFXIV, but looking at the current FFXIV, isn't it a relief? :)
Yes I do and I have such a heart warming story to go with it :)
It was like my second day playing right after my old high school's homecoming. I was a conjurer and needed some help. Invited this game named Buritoslicer Buritosandwich and we did a crap load of stuff together. We seen eachother for a while every so often and then the big wipeout it XIV and everyone quit. Right after 1.18 hit, I seen him at a random camp and we been Linkshell buddies since. Just something I thought about that makes me want to stick with XIV forever.
I first logged in about ten minutes before the first major maintenance, so I wound up being stuck in the game, unable to log out, I wound up hard rebooting in order to get out.
Werid i dont remember my first day playing 14, but i can still remember my first day playing 11 hmmmm
Oh, I remember ^^
Got into one of the later waves of alpha testing and it was surprisingly easy to get ingame, I only crashed once lol
Most people were pretty optimistic since it was alpha and so many things would change, and we were allowed to test it :o
I started making some contacts and then the alpha was over and beta came, and everyone was so impressed with how much SE changed. I felt that they wouldn't disappoint us if they managed to improve so much from alpha to beta.
Uni kept me busy so I didn't play much. Then came release with the CE version. Seeing lots of people in onion helms at newbie zones made up for the fact the release version was not different from the beta one. The random parties at Aetherytes where everyone was following the same goal of exploring new zones were great, but it soon started to wear off and most people quit. Servers became quiet and i decided to quit myself.
Recently I came back and started playing again and funny thing, those people i saw running past me about a year ago were back too, and one of them even is in one of the LS I am in lol
Oh those were the days... that we were speaking of the days back then in FFXI.
Alpha, and I remember pretty well. I logged in after work to a message saying "Alpha test will end for this session in 5 minutes"...
I was amazed by the stunning graphics.
I literally just got the game and played it for the first time. So yes I remember last week.
I remember chopping trees and thinking... "Where the crap are all these Naked Moles coming from???"
And thinking:
"Is that a Angler? Ruuuuuun!"
And remember... back then you couldn't auto disengage from a tree when you were attacked....
^LOL, a lot of have changed eh?
I remember running around with 0HP
After the first month of payment, how is everyone feeling?
Same as before payment started.
Still having fun every day with lots of things to do.
Most of my friends are still playing, so things are good. ^^
Started in the beta at some point... guessing it was open beta, 'cause I don't remember the feeling of "winning" access by chance. It was new, fresh, didn't feel like all the other theme parks I'd been through, and it was Final Fantasy! So I got the CE, and that first week where everyone was wearing the Onion Helm... not to mention the hermes shoes and the Asuran Armguards, which I still sport from time to time.
What started to get me down was the limit of 8 leves for what felt like more than 24 hours, and how they seemed to be the only interesting way to level up. Seemed like just grinding got you nothing. You had to pray you could find what you wanted in the mess of wards that were simply named different (not for what types of things were to be sold in that ward), everyone wanted like a bajillion gil for the next level range of gear, anima came back like, 1 every 24 hours or something.
Absolutely loved fishing though. :3
Came back shortly after subs started since I had 2000 crysta left over, and I'm lovin' it still today! With high hopes for the improvements we'll be seeing this year. :D
@Mikita Nightsong
Ah, I wish I had you in my guild :D
Yay a thread...
I remember logging in to check out my Onion Helm and realizing the CEdition was just as crappy and broke as Alpha and Beta.
Then SEdition released and we all enjoyed the constant server crashes and login cues...
Ahh great times... So fun to reminence about it all... So fun...
*huggles* :3
After almost one month I'm still having a grand ol' time still with the goobbue c:

It's been a rollercoaster from my first days in Open Beta to now.
1.) Okay with open beta. Impressed with the graphics, really frustrated with the slow UI. Looking forward to the community getting together and "figuring out" the market wards like they did with the "Rolanberry Markets" in XI.
2.) Hated the delay on the context sensitive weapons skills like Haymaker, Jarring Strike, and Fracture, but figured it'd be gone in standard release.
3.) Same issues with menus and combat delay still prevalent in CE release. Very upset. Felt that it was an intentional way to get us to waste our time. Still no auto sort for inventory added to that frustration. No /assist macro and other XI staples. Can't type in battle because I was too busy initiating manual attacks (still prefer it though love/hate relationship).
4.) Loved meeting new people and sharing their stories from XI. Loved leading my own LS and creating events every other day.
5.) Hated the dwindling numbers in linkshell peeps due to frustration with the game. I still shared a lot of their frustrations with menu UI. Market Wards were finally named correctly but punks would still just crowd the Battlecraft ward because it was the first on the list. Still takes two and a half hours to NOT find the droids.... swords you were looking for.
6.) Loved being able to play when I wanted for as long as I wanted but could still make feasible progress in short stints and opportunities to solo.
7.) Loved the Armoury system and multiclassing everything so I could choose whatever I wanted to create my own personal playstyle. Loved being able to wear whatever I wanted despite it "not fitting my class" at the time. Still wish we had optimal gear.
8.) Hated that nothing was represented accurately in the menus. Hated that food showed little to no effect in your menu. Hated the mysterious mechanics of food. Medicines were/are pointless.
9.) Hated that the elemental wheel was not only messed up (Wind chokes fire?), but even worse, it didn't work anyways.
10.) Loved that crafting was considered it's own class and a legitimate path to success and experience the main storyline. Didn't like that they had no purpose in a party or that there was no opportunity for them to even group craft. So much potential there thrown out.
11.) Hated that the main storyline scenarios were catered to classes that couldn't fight. Should've made classes that couldn't fight still contribute somehow to battle.
12.) Angered by the abolition of manual attack (I loved Secret of Mana and actually controlling my character). The incoming thought of 1.18 was fueling me with great vengeance and furious anger. Angered at class pigeonholing. Cried painful tears of mourning for armoury and optimal gear systems.
13.) After experiencing auto-attack for a bit and seeing the class changes, completely understood and began to see roles forming but still hated the pigeonholing of certain classes to certain roles. Entered stage 2 of the grief process for optimal gear system.
14.) In grief stage 2 for the armoury. Love the combo system, still miss battle regimens. Really looking forward to jobs and the prospects of 2.0. Weary of even more dwindling numbers.
I'm still torn to this day, but I still pay to play. It's still nowhere near the game I was advertised from E3 09' - present day, but I'm still anxious to see what 2.0 will bring. I can also dig the new management even though some key features that I absolutely loved were axed.
All in all I find ways to enjoy the game still, but it's certainly taxing sometimes to play. You can only ride a rollercoaster for so long.
bumpbumpbump
Started with open beta, but most of the worlds exploration at that time before the CE release.
After that, I struggled to stay in game since the crashes, failure to load, lag, slow UI and the number of issues made it difficult to play. I sent my PC for repair that DEC of the same year thinking it was the problem. So I missed out a month going into the next year, where I found my first LS group, Might and Magic? I think it was called before the first name change.
Despite the issues plaguing the game however, I stuck with it everyday until nearly the end of it's life. I regret missing out on the 1.23b patch, but I have a lot of experience going into A Realm Reborn.
P.S.: Necro-loco~
Holy hell, I can't believe how many threads were necroed today
I kinda missed the days when all I did was chop trees and I didn't know anything about the battle system and I had no idea how much the game was being panned.
"What? They're saying the game is free now? Awesome!" *chop*
"What you mean the game gets bad reviews?" *chop*
"Battle system? Boring?" *chop*
"Hm. What are they talking about? This game is awesome!" *chop*
I focused purely on Black Smith when I started the game. Mainly consisting of farming shards with low level classes, buying ore from miners, crafting and selling stuff at very good profit.
I manage to be first level 50 blacksmith on Fabul. I was working during this time, however sleeping 4 hours each day did take a toll on me.
