I said this before in a similar thread. The ability to wear gear above your level, but with reduced stats is similar to what happened to gear in level sync parties in FFXI. If the difference was great enough you lost all the positive stats period, and you did at times see people wearing their AF (lvl 60) in Valkrum Dunes parties (lvl 15- 20) because they didn't want to buy new gear for a single pt. As long as the stats are reduced appropriately there is no reason to restrict a players ability the wear gear except for the concept of earning the 'right' to wear something that looks really cool, like Byakko's Haidate or Kirin's Osode, by attaining a specified level. Personally I find the idea that you can't put on a shirt because you aren't the right level absurd. In contrast the idea that you can put on an item that you have yet to learn how to use fully and use it with limitations makes sense. Think of it this way, just about any kid can pick up a hammer and nail two pieces of wood together, but that same kid can't use that hammer as effectively as a carpenter without going through an apprenticeship where he/she learns how to use the tools of that trade. If you don't like the idea of partying with people who don't wear gear at their level then don't party with them.
I can't speak for other servers, but on Mysidia almost no one sells gear levels 1 -20. You have no choice but to buy level 20 gear at level 1 unless you use your starter gear, or you know a crafter and don't mind buying the 107 mats it takes to make that bronze scythe from scratch.
Level Sync is something I would like to see return. I have a bigger problem with grouping with rank 35s to do 30 leve when I am rank 25, than I do with the 30 archer wearing 39 gear... oh wait that was me XD
Well, i got a piece of armor that is way better than what i have now, but when i put it on, i found out with horror that it was...underwear. So instead of running around in gay and ridiculous looking undies, i chose to keep my old junky armor.
Other games solve this problem by having the so-called appearance slots. Namely you equip the nice looking armor in the appearance slot and it will show you wearing it, but your good armor will be equipped in the normal slot and thats the one that will count for your stats. Both EQ2 and Vanguard use this system and i like it.
It's because gear doesn't matter in this game. Maxing your stats doesn't matter either. They're changing everything, so while you can, take off your shirt when you fight wolves and be a man.
There was actually a suggestion made about Appearance Slots not too long ago. Going to have to dig a couple pages, but still, I think its a good idea. That way, you don't have to sacrifice stats for fashion. There were a lot of goofy-looking armor combos in FFXI, WoW, and some other MMOs.
So then requirements won't matter.
You're proud you got to 50? I got to 50 on 4 jobs now. I have friends who blow that out of the water.
Pride in your Rank is a little silly in a game that's so ridiculously easy to hit the cap.
Rank requirements wouldn't give you the satisfaction you desire.
You want NM gear that you have to actually earn through a difficult fight that can't be bought out of a bazaar, I think.
Based on your explanation, that is.
Honestly in any other game like XI I'd agree 100% with the OP but just LOOK at some of the gear.
I had a fit when I noticed my BF choosing looks over stats for his THM but then I saw the other option; a potato sack and that shut me up for good.
I just recently did the same thing when I noticed only good gear for my Highlander MAR was a pair of TIGHTS! No way in hell am I going to run around in those.
Also would color be too much to ask in some gear? Even when the gear is supposedly blue or pink it still looks brown. It's a bit depressing really.
I know from experience that art direction for games is not easy but in cases like this I'd like to advise the art team that the shape and materials of these items is enough to convey the feeling of place and time.
Even the potato sacks could look amazing if there was some colorful crest insignia embroidered on it:

What a stupid complaint. You are upset because people are playing how they want and not how you want, LMAO.
I can totally see the reason for wearing stuff that "looks better" rather than being beneficial for your class. The only reason I don't care about what people wear right now, is cause equipment doesn't matter. Stats do nothing, Attributes do nothing, you could run around naked and get hit for 100dmg more than someone else wearing full set of gear.
As soon as that shit gets fixed though and I see people running around in equip that "looks good" rather than being beneficial for their class and they want an invite for whatever(PT grind, NMs etc), they can f**k off and find someone else that let's them leech their stuff.
As far as I'm concerned, the Templar set is at the crucible of Ezorian fashion. So I win either way!
Somewhat true, I still use an Armored Calvary bow as an r46 arc, (just looks badass imo) but my damage doesn't seem to be significantly lower than a crab bow.
Then again, I kept my Selene's Bow in XI all the way to lv 90, even after getting a Fay Gendawa with decent augments.
Allowing to wear any equipment regardless of your actual rank is worst idea ever.
And I'm not talking about if a given player is using gimped or a "correct" gear for his actual rank, I don't care too much about that......the real problem is the negative impact of this on the uniqueness of the game.
I like to see people with different clothes/armor and weapons. I like to recognize someone's level/rank just by the equipment they are wearing. And I think that being able to equip that awesome or good looking gear on your character should be a reward of your proper progress in the game.
With this sort of immature and completely rude response I've just about had it with the irrational hostility people are having towards this topic. Just because it's a forum and you can troll a lot more easily without saying it to somebody's face doesn't dictate being overbearingly rude and snobbish in your response. The point I was trying to make was that wearing gear that is way over level for ppl who are for example r20 conj and wearing a vintage hauby just cause it looks cool is insane. People insist that their "freedom" is being threatened by this issue I'm talking about and it's downright silly to get so worked up over a topic like this. In a calm and collected manner I was attempting to pose the point that this wearing equipment at any rank system could have some vast reprecussions. I'm not trying to be snobbish, selfish, or controlling so I'd appreciate if the responses could be a bit more polite.
Everyone knows it's all about how you look in MMOs!
ITT: Roleplayers argue why they shouldn't be judged for wearing their roleplaying gear to leve parties.
I've not read all of your posts, so I can't make a definitive judgement. But from your original post, it seems you were implying that if people wear any gear that isn't the best, or optimal as gear nazis like to call it to cover up their single track minds, it was a terrible choice and it shouldn't be allowed.
Now you wonder why you were getting aggressive replies, and to boot you are calling other people trolls. You Sir, are the real troll. When you go around telling people what they should be allowed to do and what they shouldn't be allowed to do... in your world of fabricated rules designed for people with no mind of their own! Ah yes, this is the real issue. Why are there people who feel like we should all follow an unwritten rule book when we play an MMO? Hmmm? Now that is a truly good question!
It reminds me of something. Something that should be close to the hearts of many players. What do the 'normal' people in society say about your geek habits and hobbies? They tell you it's not 'normal' and it's no good, right? That you are a loser in life. And you get angry about that, don't you? You say they just don't understand that it's what you enjoy. Then what do you do?
You go in-game and act the exact same way to players who don't wear what's considered the best gear!!!! The Irony!

I don't know about anyone else here, but I like how my character looks. I don't want to see every 50 character wearing the same gear because of the stats. I feel it loses individuality and uniqueness in the person and their character. I like to keep good stats and good looks at the same time, while I stare at my character for 8+ hrs of game time.
Besides, having something equipped that doesn't match looks atrocious, regardless of the stats. I understand completely why people would become flabbergasted by the choices of other players fashion choices, opposed to stat benefits, but if its 1 or 2 lower gear slots being sacrificed for the look to feel right, I don't mind. Its not as if there's characters running around with full onion gear or running around naked on my server, unless its very low.
I use Onion Gaskins and Onion Pattens with my Loyalists Bliaud on my R35 Con (as of now) since that, to me, i the only thing I've seen in the game's gear library that goes perfectly with it hand and hand look-wise. Everything I've seen just looks, bad, and discourages me in wearing it. But that's just me, I know plenty of others will disagree in a heart beat, and I don't blame them, I understand the silliness very well, but that's how I feel about my experience, look and the character I've created in this world.
There's those who care about the look of their character and how he/she presents him/herself, and then there's those who don't. Same goes for those who love the best stats all around, and no looks. And then, there's those like me who favor both.
That's my 2 cents. LOL Kinda long response for something silly.

EDIT: After reading through a few posts though, I am against wearing gear that is not optimized for my rank, which is 20-30 levels higher than what I am. I wear what's in range and looks coolest, with decent to good stats.
I usually wait to be in a certain level range before I buy/equip any new gear. I feel irritated when I see other players wearing high level gear that they shouldn't be wearing for another 20-40 levels but I do not say anything to them and probably never will because it's their choice and I won't dictate how they play.
It's their experience and I hope they at least enjoy it. I offer them advice as to why they shouldn't wear it, if they're my friends but others I respect their choices and let them play.
There a lots of people who do things to look better even if it brings them discomfort. Look at women and things like Highheels, corsets, waxing, shaving, etc.
I don't know why this would confuse anyone. Personally, I myself also dress my characters to look good first, and have awesome stats second. Thats why things like the Sipani and Unicorn gear in FFXI were my favorites.
Honey, I must kick-ass in style! :)
I have never really gone with the stream. I tend to fight up waterfalls pretty easily.
People do it since gear and stats are for the better part useless altho not completly, altho its a trend that could proberly die off soon as the attributes start to be noticable, Only really defence hp and mp is something that will make any difference in your life of fighting deadly mounsters. Im doing it msyelf in light bursts altho not to the case im wearing a coatee everywhere i go, Steel Preserves ftw!
Altho to be fair its nice to see people looking more different instead of a Complete Huaby spam across the board at least for the short while~
That's good to hear. Sounds like you have the same blood pumping through your veins. Keep on munching on that sushi... and Winning!
Nope, I don't relate. Ideally, gear would look cool and have good stats. However, that's just not the case. If a piece of gear looks like crap to me, I don't want to wear it and I'll wear stuff w/ lower stats. I like the challenge anyway.
Your argument crumbles with one little comparison. If he decides to be geeky and has strange video game habbits, he's only affecting himself. If you're in a game, doing whatever you want AND expect other people to just drag you along, although you are more of a burden to the people rather than a help, THATS selfish.
You only have your own thing in mind and don't care about the other peolpe who drag you along, hence you're being selfish, cause you don't even consider putting the benefit for the group over your own benefit.
That's as if he, as a geeky video game playing person, starts to go to soccer games and expects to be put on the field, although he doesn't even know how to play soccer, but he wants to do it and he gives a fuck about the rest of the team who train and whatever to actually be good in what they are doing and he pulls down their performance, just cause he only thinks of himself, and not of the greater good for the group.
This is an MMO...if you can't even consider doing stuff for the greater good for the people you are playing with, go fuck off and play an offline game, cause you definetely give a shit about other people hence you should spare everyone else with your presence since you even think the other players are selfish, not you. That's just obnoxiously ridiculous...egoism is what destroys our world and it's becoming a more and more spread illness.
The people you think are selfish are actually the ones allowing you to play with your own narrow minded selfish way, cause they make up for your lack of performance.
PS: The OP NEVER talked about the BEST gear in each slot, he talked about gear thats "useful" for your class, rather than just looks. Just look at the CON/THMs...a lot of them wear Bladed Lantern Shields, cause they look better. But it gives Attack+, while the Square Shields give Magic Accuracy...its not about wearing the BEST gear possible, its about wearing gear thats at least useful for your class...
I don't understand this calling from you guys for people to all end up looking like everyone else.
If everyone wears the best for their class all classes look the same, it becomes "homogenized and boring" as people seem to want say a lot on these forums lately.
At this point in time under the current system, nothing you do matters or makes a difference anyways. Enjoy it while it lasts and wear what you feel like wearing for the time being. It makes no real difference and nobody cares. Go plate mage!
Personally I'm hoping the Materia system allows for people to wear what they want while having the stats they want as well.
Like Coatee's but prefer the stats of a Haubergeon?
Wear the Haubergeon and max out its AP, Convert it to Materia and mount it to the Coatee. Now the Coatee has the Haubs stats and you can be happy in both appearance and stats.
The OP was pretty vague he didnt provide any examples.
Basically it comes down to this if you don't like the gear they're wearing kick them out of your party. I'm sure the community appreciates this kind of attitude. You should know though that this tiny discriminant in the stats amount to nothing.
Aye, the harder you make it, the harder you become ^^
a spirited bout is more rewarding than a calculated one ^^
i got dozens of these
Not to OP, but to everybody here who posts that wearing favorite gear is wrong.
"Who are you to judge other people?"
"Why do they have to follow you?"
"Why must you party with other people you dislike?"
And..
"If you aren't partying with them, why care?"
In reality people who want to look fashionable can go along with same type of people. It won't effect those who care. And people who care should just group within your own group so that you don't have to order other people around.
Dude, chill. No need to pop one of your arteries getting angry about this. It's just a game. Calm down.
Now, let us understand each other. First of all, my comparison was about the attitudes involved, it was not about comparing the events that led to such attitudes. Don't try to fool us all that people who complain about the gear that others wear are all nice and pleasant about it. I'm pretty sure most of them act just like you and start cussing at those pesky losers with the crappy gear on as soon as they meet them. Of course I'm wrong! You are all pleasant, and those people with the crap gear are evil cretins with demonic red eyes and dripping fangs. They are revolting trolls with maggot filled intestines!
Where was I? Right, and next up on the agenda is that magic word. Performance. Yes there we have it folks, MMO gaming in a nutshell. Performance. Buy FFXIV for your performance craving needs!. "I bought FFXIV and it was the most optimal gaming experience I've ever had! We had hours and hours of grinding in optimal gear that everyone else was wearing! Oh Oh and the party members were so fun to chat with! We shared thoughts on the DPS ratio of archer to 20 decimal points! SO FUN". I read that review on the back of the box, honest!
Indeed, people who just want to chill out and have fun... they are selfish. They are evil. If only they would see our way of thinking... be optimal, wear what you are told to wear, do what you are told to do. Only then will you find true happiness.
I'll just say this, if you're paying more attention to my gear than your own role in the party, I don't want you in my group to begin with.
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...and-Match-Club An idea to resolve the issue for most people.
All I'm saying is that if one player in my party is complaining about another player's gear, guess who's getting kicked? It's not the one getting complained about, I'll tell you that for sure. Stuff like that makes the party no fun, and that's my goal, to have fun.
