PS1 game that has better battle graphics than FFXIV

Wait. Are we talking about graphics or art style? Because as long as you can get a good style, graphics shouldn't matter too much.

Sure it's easier to paint a masterpiece with brush over a cotton swab, but it's not impossible...I don't know where I'm going with this.

You're absolutely right....
People are impatient.. plain and simple....
What good would it do to increase the particle FX, or water FX or natural lighting or rendered objects on a game that already recommends a GTX 460 or better... on an engine that was made for PS3 OGL and X360 DX9?
They increase that and then what? You need a GTX 480 or Radeon HD 5870 or better to even get the thing running smoothly?
People... there is a process....
The middleware (specifically graphics) engine and the battle system reciprocally affect each other and need to be sorted out, and optimized before we can even begin to see anything else.... yes, there are multiple teams working on the game... but most teams can do nothing until they are familiar with the new battle system and the optimizing of the engine. Both of these changes should also affect perceived lag and latency in the game and it's controls.... which affects the animations even more....
But SE knows players want instant gratification... i think Yoshi should have taken the first 6 months in "office" and said "No updates, we are overhauling the game engine to at least support directX 10, then we can talk about what the game needs"
and the future of FFXIV could be built on a more solid ground. Then they could redo many of the formulae that cause too frequent server requests and contribute to the global latency encountered in the game...
But no... He has had to talk about Auction houses and grade 6+ gathering nodes instead of focusing on the root of the games issues....
the one thing you have to understand is Yoshi-P's name is on this game now, this is his life... if you're complaints and constant nagging fuck up the game, you just move on to the Old Republic or Oblivion 5, while the developers could lose a lot more than a few ranks invested in a fictitious pixels powered by moving electrons....

And for the record.. Chrono Cross sucked a fat one.... As did Legend of Mana

Except you can't see your character in a good number of the shots, particularly the more epic ones. Not good in a battle system that has multiple players trying to do things at once that could be relevant to you at less than a moment's notice. In Cross' battle system, or almost any single player game for that matter, the game can control the timing of moves because it only has to worry about a single player, not where everything else is. An MMO leaves much of the battle flow out of the server's control, so it can't afford to suddenly switch to a different camera angle due to the risk of upsetting the battle progression (causes players to rage like nothing else).

Thus, you will very very rarely see effects involving changed angles and camera movements in this game. If you could, our current visuals would stand to beat Cross' with a wide, smug grin.

- The time flow slowed down at strategic moments to give nice poses (not viable when other players are participating as well).

- The game controlled monster positioning, obstacle positioning and character movement in line with the streamlined battle system, making these possible (the battle is done in a cutscene, not on the map).

Now imagine what those moves would have looked like if things were not slowed down or framed. "Fang just does a quick dragoon jump."

I'm not saying all the spells in Chrono Cross can be used, but you are saying all of them can't be used. Which is still a load of bull. Stop with the generalisation of Chrono Cross and focus on the elements the OP is pointing at: the basic spells that are 3D animated that can be seen from any point of view. He didn't bring up any spells that change the whole enviroment, which wouldn't work in mmorpg with multiple people with different camera views.

Actually they already made a statement about animations being very weak so there isn't much of a reason to bring this up again.

Lol yeah I don't think I can compete with your Adonis DNA. I see you noticed the phrase "better graphics" in my thread title and thought a PS1 game had overall better graphics than a 2010 PC game. It's easy to see a phrase and respond to it without realizing the point to be made about it.


@Catapult, I see you noticed the cinematic camera in the video. That's actually just an optional feature in battle. The default is a normal camera view. FFXIV doesn't have to have a cinematic view to have better battle effects.

I agree with Mikita, the ws animations are for real time animations that must be quick, because you dont want to end up having a 15 sec animation to make 250 damage while with a regular attack every 3 seconds you can make 100 damage, for MMORPG they have to make animations fast but they can make them look better, with todays video you can see what theyre aiming for, in my opinion the lancer and gladiator ws looked awesome.

But one thing that i would like to see is if they add limit breaks or overdrives skills, an elaborated cinematic that only the player that makes it can see, and the rest of the ppl around can see a similar cinematic of you but without all the effects that you can see (you dont want to be seeing all the time the world around you changing into a galaxy because a guy near you made his limit break)

Just listening to the battle music makes me want to play it again! but then it was my favourite =p

Alot of the skills could use work on them to make them more unique thats for sure. I dont totally hate the wow bar but i do hate that the chat bar is to the side rather in the middle, forever missing stuff that is said. I'm found wondering if the old menu of attack skill magic item would work better or not....
