Actually, I have made friends on duty finder. Many are on my server. I also made friends just talking to people on my server. If ANYTHING, FF14 has proven more friendly and social than WOW post-TBC. Game is new. Maybe that's why.

I tend not to type much, I'm on the PS3 and have a USB keyboard, and I just dislike typing, I like talking to people, but typing annoys me, especially when I'm trying to heal and throw in some damage if I have the time.
I wish you could commend at least 2 ppl in the 8 person groups. :(
I do also wonder why they didn't make it so the window would come up, and instead of just picking one person, it would list them like it does now, but it would be like Person1 "Was this person helpful/fun?" Yes/No. Person2 "Was this person helpful/fun?" Yes/No. etc. Or whatever wording is better. It would default to "No" and you can just ignore it completely if you wanted. However for the two or three (or more) ppl that really stood out to you, you would be able to click "Yes". :) Sorry if anyone has mentioned a similar idea already.
I just really struggle picking ONE person when they've often all been fantastic players. :< It makes me feel bad I can only pick one!
I had an awesome group of first timers in Copperbell mines HM and we were all talking/ working out the fights together.. we did second boss first time and the last boss on third try once we realised the rocks didn't respawn.
Sad thing was that everyone was playing on the same level and at the end as I was whm they all just gave me the commendations and i felt a bit guilty for it considering it's not a hard dungeon to heal and the DD's were doing most of the work with the boss mechanics.
I suggested to my FC that it would be nice if after every 5th commendation you give out you recieve one yourself as a reward for paticipating. At least this way you'll earn some even if it's a bit slow.
is there always a reason to commend someone?
i mean if its just your standard run, with a group that everyone obviously knows what to do, why commend. its silly. if someone lead a couple of inexperienced players while explainging what to do , thats something, or prevented a wipe somehow, idk.
but throwing out commendations on a standard run? c'mon
People will commend or not commend based on their own personal criteria (which is how it should be), I for one always commend since I don't see the harm in giving someone a little something extra for their time. I base who gets my commendations off of attitude and sociability, whether or not the person cares to respond to me or if they could care less about what is going on and simply going through the motions.
What happens is roughly secondary, if people are inconveniencing other people they'll be low on my list. I don't commend tanks who don't dodge for instance or DD who try to pull more than the tank is comfortable with. If it is someone's first time and they do well, I'll usually throw a commendation their way.
Agreed. As someone who is currently leveling DPS classes, to clear out my inventory of gear, and seeing how infrequently DPS seems to be commentated, I usually commend the other DPS by default unless they do something particularly bad like constantly pull aggro, decide they want to tank because the current tank isn't pro, control the speed of the run by deciding when and what to pull, etc.
I don't know if it's a western/eastern thing but i doubt anyone here actually gives commendations for being nice. Most dungeon finder parties no one even talks to eachother, so what do you have left to gauge people on? How they perform their roles. Unfortunately healer/tank roles are more obvious and easy to gauge so i suspect DPS get shafted a bit when it comes to commendations.
There is kind of an awkward moment at the end when people are too scared to leave in case nobody has voted yet (if that makes sense?) like people edge towards the exit. I always give one straight away, wait like 10 seconds, then just leave. I've gotten 5 so far, some from PvP and some from HM dungeons. I'm not expecting to get them a lot, I play DPS, and people probably aren't going to vote most of the time. I'm just gonna be happy when I do get one.
any statistics to back this up?
you suspect, indeed.
on the topic of 'leaving right away'...
I .always. finish a dungeon with at least a quick 'see you around' or something similar. that's more than enough time for people to vote. and if they don't, then they don't. *shrug*
I try to always give my commendations... and for the ppl that left, too bad for em
There's no worthwhile reward in it so who would care?
How would I acquire such statistics in a reliable fashion? How could I prove my statistics are valid? Take screenshots of every commendation and my role? How would you know I don't just play DPS badly and such don't get commendations as often as when i play healer/tank?
I wish I could do those things but to be honest it isn't worth spending the time on! I guess what i'm trying to point out is that the feature doesn't seem to work as intended if people don't actually socialise. I love to socialise! But no one talks to me :(
If there are no outstanding performances in a run, I'll commend the chattiest, funniest person in group. Far too many players run through in icy silence. D: I like a good fun run~
Ironically enough, though mind you I generally always play healer, I've gotten a few commendations and generally give them out to friendlier people. Those Wannabe NPC players annoy me. If you can't even say hello and all you care about is 'go go go'.. guess what, not going to vote for you. However if someone is friendly, talkative and is actually social.. usually vote. Only thing that stinks is like yesterday, a great group, everyone joking, having fun.. I can't vote for everyone =(
support this system fails
Did a P-torium run last night, and got 6 commendations, I was like waaaaat. I'm starting to wonder if the tanks tend to get the most, simply because they are leading the run all the time, so people are always noticing you. So at the end they are like ya sure why not.
It's just like a one night stand. Don't matter how good it was, you just want to be out of there once you're done
What are commendations used for? do they group people with high commendations with other highly praised people?
Some people could just not be pressed to care about commendations as they don't care about the rewards. Personally I see them as an inconvenience. When I enter a dungeon I want it to be over as fast as possible. People abuse the commendation system. They waste 5 minutes at the start discussing who is going to commentate who. Commendations are for people who deserve commendations, not trophies for everyone.
They should just default the system so that if no one commendates anyone it gives 1 to everyone.
I've kinda noticed a trend really. I need to test it though. On my warrior I rarely get any from other players, but PLD's in my FC seem to talk of getting tons without doing anything besides the job they play.
Kinda makes me sad as I enjoy my WAR far more then running about as a PLD >-<
They need to just make the screen auto pop up after the last boss is killed. Some people in end game runs especially always leave without looking at loot or anything because they already have better gear. If the commendation window just popped up, they would be more likely to vote before sprinting for the door.
The first dungeon i did in 2.1, i saw the tiny box in the corner pop up as i was zoning out. i was like wtf was that?
I won't feel ashamed for something I didn't say. I only thought PS players had it complicated with the in-game comunication during dungeons and raids based on previous discussions about it. I know PC players bash PS3 players, but it's not a good idea to go all defensive when someone mention them in a post.
Again, the game didn't give me any reason for being antisocial. This behaviour seems to be contagious somehow. I don't ask them to go chating with us all the way, but there are certain someones who don't emit a single answer when they are asked.
And yet you continue to post inane drivel in a thread you supposedly don't care about.
It's a shame that the commendation and party finder feature isn't really used at this time. I think as more time goes on, they will be more and more used. I've noticed that the commendation pop up isn't really visible and looks just like the loot pop up. In AK/WP/etc. I don't even look at the loot tables so it could also be the cause.
If they changed the color of the commendation pop up or have it pull the window or when the final boss goes down, I think it would be used quite a bit more.
I've gotten two commendations so far. Both were while I was playing SMN. One of the dungeons was Qarn, and the other was Sastasha. In both, there was at least one new person and I helped by explaining the bosses. I think that's why I got commendations.
We know it's coming soon as the final boss is dead. I make a habbit of choosing whom I am giving it to prior so I can usually get my vote off before they bail.
I have only done a few runs of wp since the patch and I just give it to the other dps if they dont do anything rude to lose it. I figure most people are giving them to tanks and heals so I want to do my part to help my fellow dps. I have only gotten 1 so far in about 4 runs. I can see myself becoming jaded as a dps if other dps dont start returning the favor though. I'll admit I will just start leaving without voting. The only way to avoid this is if SE forces you to vote before you can leave after the final boss is defeated. But that kind of ruins the whole purpose of it I guess. Im just not going to chat and suck up for a vote. I know I do my job well enough.
Sure thing! Just run 500 dungeons first though, and then you can have your shinies. You know, since my way involves still doing content and earning them, whereas yours is the new generation entitlement way that gives you things for nothing.
So you think it's more fair for one person to get all of the commendations when the entire group was good, instead of everyone getting one if a group was good? Really? Well now I know who to never give one to should our paths ever cross in a dungeon.
