Ugh, no thanks. Sure it's quiet, then raise a little hell? What's stopping you from talking over /sh now? You have LS, /t, and /p
At this point in the game there is really no use for it. It's just another obnoxious feature that will make the game feel more or less like another one of Aeria's F2P games. If you like it so much, go there and see that it's all crap.
Want to have a Search for party? Ask for a party flag and a tag in the party options to include a list of everyone who wants to. That's a lot more useful to people than a global chat where everything is lost in the continuous spam.
If you're so against it, the toggle feature is there.
Nobody responds in shout because it has limited range.
Also, I'd rather not sit with a party flag for 5 hours like you have to use to in XI just to get a party. So I don't want a LFG feature unless they make it as successful as WoW's was.
How does this make any sense at all? so you DON'T want a party seek feature but instead you want to spam the global chat and try and get your word in that you're making a party although almost everyone will ignore you because of the countless WTB/WTT/WTS spam going on on that channel? Instead of someone who is making a party pulls up the window to see who is seeking and sending you a /tell directly? I mean there are reasonable complaints and then there is this. TBH with you, I'll take party seek over global spam any day.
I have yet to see a decent argument in this thread against having global chats. Gold sellers and spam not being ones, as you can obviously disable the global chats.
You have global chat in the forms of LS, P and tell. No need for global shout basically.
Yes, those options are available but a global chat channel would allow players to meet new people in-game.
For example, what if none of your LS's armorers are online at that time and you need someone to make some stuff for you? You could ask over the global channel if anyone can make it for you. Chances are, there will be someone online out of the server's current online population that can help you at that particular time. Or at least the chances would be higher if you didn't limit yourself to the people you know all of the time.
There are so many examples of which global chat channels can be put to good use.
FFXIV also needs to become more social since players, 90% of the time, only ever talk in LS chat, making the game seem dead to new and old players alike.
While I wouldn't use the system, if it gets people off of the forums and into the game, then let's slap it on.
More than global chat though, I would love a global in game, and player made, message board. Just like a small one/two line banner across the top or bottom of the screen; showing the first sentence or so of random messages that players can create. You can click on the banner and filter through all the messages, from newest to oldest, and browse what people are saying. Would definitely need some limitations tho. Like one post per player at a time (and you can delete your post at anytime) and they get deleted when you log off, and why not even make em cost some money to make a post. And some kind of options to select who sees your message. So if your looking for some people for Limsa leves, just limit it so only people around Limsa could see and etc etc
I'm totally with Mack on this one (in that I'm completely against global chat). However, that being said, if you do have it, I don't have any issues with it so long as I can turn it all off so I can play the game with the chat channels that make sense like P or LS and those who support the global chat can enjoy their endless flood of junk text and pointless nonsense. win win.
I understand what you mean, but you dont need a global chat for that, since it will most likely be flooded with spam, instead they should make a repair-chat or something like that, so people can ask for services etc. The global chat doesnt have anything to do with that, there's better ways to implement the stuff you want.
Well, if the FF community is so great, why anyone would be afraid of global channel abusive spamming? Afterall, the problem is not the feature in itself but how people use it.
OT: What I would like to see for the search party feature is actually a board where a player can register the classes and levels for which he's willing to look for a party so we can avoid rank50 people soloing/farming while seeking for party for their lower rank jobs.
I dont even have an opinion on the community. Most likely there will be spam though. It doesnt have to be so black and white btw, you CAN have other options. It doesnt have to be global chat or not, theres alot of ways which you can have the things you like.
I dont understand what the quality of the community has to do with anything.
As you are quoting me, let me then reply to your post.
Did I say anywhere in my post that it has 'to be global chat or not'? Did I say there was no other options? My only statement was to say that a global channel is not the problem per se, it's what people make out of this feature.
I could also say the same thing about 'Most likely there will be spam though': there are a lot of ways you can have a global channel without spamming problems.
The fact that you 'dont understand what the quality of the community has to do with anything' does not surprise me ;)
/cheers
In Ul'dah I've already experienced a lot of spamming in shout. That's annoying enough as it is.
Especially a certain few on Besaid who just like to argue and harass and slander people.
Global chat just makes it easier for this annoying behavior to go on, and makes us all immediately accessible to RMTs. Of course RMT are going to spam it if it exists. Everyone sees it.
I say yes.
But make it opt-in. If people want to do /2 like in WOW, fine with me, but make it only for people that like that sort of thing.
If you're new to XIV and you log in and see that sort of chatter going on as soon as you hit the ground, it's going to set the tone for the rest of your experience in the game.
I can roll with it but I can see plenty of people not wanting to, or being turned off from it. If it's on by default, then it reflects on the whole community of the game. If it's off by default, people have to enter it and know how to exit it.
That said, I don't see it happening in XIV. Pretty sure the JP players wouldn't want that, and with a multi-language game, a single server-wide global channel would probably have quite a few issues, and a separate global channel for each language would be counter-productive.
Just a clarification, when you hear global chat, do you think one channel that everyone on the server can use, or do you think multiple channels split apart by interest (general, selling, buying, crafting, gathering, lfp, etc.)? Or something else altogether?
i want global chat! yes! how about giving us option to vote ban chat. if RTM are shouting for sale. click on character name and vote ban chat . like 50 vote would ban chat him.
this game needs chat channels it needs everything they should honestly start copy and pasting from rift lol no lie and put a FF twist on it but the thing is Square enix hasnt made a good game since the ps1....soooooo heres to failure *cheers*
Also it would be really nice if there was an option such that using a channel once set it as your /cm. And I mean "nice" as in "every other game allows this".
It's is not that hard to have a real chat system, right?Quote:
/join general-en
"You joined general-en as /3"
/join trade-fr
"You joined trade-fr as /4"
/4 WTS Omelette du fromage!
/ls3 I fail at selling my things guys.
/join lfg-jp
"You joined lfg-jp as /5"
But again, it's not hard to have a "/ls-kick 3 Random Guy"...
Spoke with Yoshida regarding the discussion taking place here. While the chat system is one of the many core edits planned along with other systems, due to the fact that server fixes are higher in priority, we are not able to delve into the specific content right now.
With this said, please continue to give us feedback on this topic and we will make sure to keep it in mind for our future discussions. I know there are a lot of "this way works/this doesn't/don't do this/make sure you don't do this!!1!" so let us know your thoughts.
do you really want to see this all the time?

With Bayohne reply in mind, here's how I would like to see global chat channels work, which is solely based off my experience from EQ (which, it seems, is loosely based on IRC channels):
Note: You are not signed up to any channel by default. You must join all channels manually.
- /autojoin <channel name[: password optional]> -- automatically joins the specified channel when you log in.
- /join <channel name[: password optional]> -- join a channel.
- /create <channel name[: password option]> -- create a new channel
- /leave <channel name> -- leave a particular channel by name
- /leave <channel #> -- leave a particular channel by number
- /leave all -- level all added chat channels
- /list -- list all chat channels you belong to
- /list # -- list the names of all the players in a particular chat channel
- /list <filter> -- list all public chat channels that you can join (public being all channels not password protected). Where <filter> can be "official" for non-player created channels (read: SE created ones), or just a keyword in the channel's name.
- /# <text> -- sends text to a particular chat, where # is the channel number
And I'd like to see this...
- /tell <world name>.<player name> -- Send a tell to a player on another world. For SPAM protection, you can only send crossworld tells to someone on your friends list. This would require the ability to add people to your friends list that are on different servers.
- /tell <friendlist #> -- Send a tell to the # person in your friend list. E.g. To send a tell to the 2nd person in your friend's list use: /tell 2 Hello!
Thoughts, comments?
Again. You don't have to join the channel if you don't want to. It will not affect you with a toggle option. Furthermore, RMT exists in every MMO. Not having global chat does not prevent RMT! It does however affect the community aspect, which is currently lacking.
Yes it is true that global chat often times becomes a cesspool of junk. I won't deny that. However, global chats are often the most helpful when it comes to new players asking for help. It becomes a recruitment tool for linkshells. It becomes a searching for party members tool. It does a lot of things all because you can communicate with other people who won't necessarily be in twenty steps of you. The current tools are not effective for assembling groups nor meeting new people.
If you insist on playing in the dark with only talking to a limited number of people. That's perfectly fine and I won't try and stop you or sway your opinion. You can just toggle the chats off and it will go back to what it is now: complete silence.
Furthermore, the more successful features this game accumulates the better off it is at surviving and becoming a worthwhile game. XIV doesn't have to copy any MMO, but communication is a vital component of MMO games. XIV has very little.
No global chat please.. too much spam. I wouldn't mind some type of message board or something of that effect, where players could post WTB adds, or something like that, but limited! Regardless, a party system, and the Market wards are everything players need to host there requests.
No Global Chat. Don't need it don't want it. Optional or not. NO!
Global chat is a nightmare. It will also increase the amount of GM petitions with, "So-and-so called me a bad word!", or "Someone was making fun of this [race/gender/sexual orientation/kitty cat] and that offends me!"
Yeah, that sounds real nice.
I'd rather bring up a more pressing concern... Can we get the ability to chat in any ls we have equipped? I'd really like /l1 and /l2 because swapping shells constantly to talk to 2 different groups is irritating, and sometimes the time it takes to make the change can cause your comment to lose relevance in a conversation.
I sure as HELL don't want Global Chat. PLEASE don't give idiots a place for their drama and bigotry and ignorance or the RMT a place to spam or morons a place to troll. If you put it in you're at a severe handicap not using it and thus I'd have no choice but to use it every now and then. I'm really not up for having to deal with this WoW kiddie crap.
Why not? What is it about global chat that you don't like? Are you referring to a global chat where everyone gets the messages instead of the limited range of /shout or /say? Could it be something that you opt into and split apart a broad range interests? Would you still be opposed to that?
Are you viewing global chat is something that anyone can just logging and spam /all LALALALALALALALALA with everyone in the world getting? Because that system can easily be abused and would be quickly annoy everyone ingame. It's also not the type of global channel that I would like to see them implement.
Also against global chat. To those saying it adds to the sense of community, FFXI's community was great and didn't have or need global chat. I just see a whole bunch of nonsense being spammed in it, hardly the side of the community I would like to see on a daily basis.
And no, toggle option doesn't help either. Let's say I have it toggled off and someone is shouting for something I need or am trying to sell in global chat, I would never see it.
FFXI's chat worked perfectly fine, there was still spam but not an entire server worth of it. Please do not add this. There's FAR more important issues.
That is why in XI I could stand with LFP flag open for several hours before I got a party...
Such a sense of community.
Also to those who want multiple linkshell chats. It is a nice feature, but then everyone would just end up being in every linkshell. Defeats any purpose really. When or if future content comes it would also blur the line of who gets to participate and who doesn't. I don't see it being effective, but its not something I'd write off as useless either.
The shout chatting in XI in Jueno was pretty clean and actually fun to chatter in, as well as when the masses moved to WG. People really didn't spam useless bull, at least on my server they didn't. I would like a GC as long as people kept it clean like in XI....but it might not happen with the people in this community.
What does that have to do with sense of community? And how would global chat help you in that position?
All global chat would do would add more "DD looking for party" spam, while there's still no one looking for whatever job you were. No one said the party recruitment system was perfect, and that's hardly what's being discussed here.
FFXI's chat system was acceptable but could have been a lot better.
And I don't think anyone is saying that there aren't more important issues. But the thing is, changes don't come quickly or easily. If they see this as something that people are interested in, they can start planning it out, fit it into the queue and maybe have something ready later on.
Please don't insult people who have differing opinions than you. I am not an idiot or a moron for wanting a feature that you clearly oppose. Maybe you are contributing to the same effect that others find irritating in global chat or even forums like these.
I am not saying sarcasm is out of the question, but please be respectful.
FFXI's chat system was actually very, very limited compared to other MMOs. There were virtually no public chat channels at all. The closest thing was /shout, but even that had a horribly limited range (I think it was something like 120 yalms or so, which didn't even cover the entire area of a zone).
If not a Global chat channel, then at the very least there should be city-wide chat-channels. This is an MMO, after all. Communication is essential.
