GTX 780 running <20 fps at Revenant's Toll, normal?

Sure, the PS4 COULD be the best-optimized of any client due to its unchanging hardware, but if you go by what SE actually did with FFXI and the PS2, what will happen is the client will be not-very-impressive performance-wise at release, and will get slower and buggier after every expansion. Let's not even mention what they did with the XBOX360 version. Console players didn't get special treatment either in this regard -- the PC version also got much slower over time (not entirely the fault of SE), but at least it didn't crash as frequently.

If SE was really concerned about performance, they'd have a 64-bit client using the latest-release of the intel compiler, and they'd also have a special version for AMD (since the intel compiler is broken for non-intel). This would likely cause only a few percent increase though.


Oh, with my GTX780 and 331.82 driver on w7sp1-32, 5ghz 2500k: At the Toll with ~100 characters onscreen and 1920x1200 true-fullscreen (max settings, culling off), the lowest framerate I observed was 39fps. The aetheryte and crystal background was visible. CPU usage was about 68% and about 1GB of ram was used. Looking at the ground in the same position i get 101fps and only 58% CPU.

Also, turning on culling boosts lowest framerate from 39 to 50fps, but only when there isn't much character motion. The extreme framerate fluctuation this option causes makes it way too annoying to keep enabled.

You need to stop thinking about this console generation is like earlier generations of consoles. It's a fact that this generation of consoles is more PC-like than any consoles that have come before. Mainly because optimization in older consoles was difficult because the hardware was not well understood by developers.

The PS3 was a great example of this... A very complex processor which when it was released it had a great theoretical peak performance. But because it was so different from other architectures it took years of developing tool chains and methods to tap that potential power.

Because of these problems Sony and Microsoft made the generation very PC-Like which makes them VERY well understood. So the software is already MUCH more optimized than early games for older consoles. The PS4 client should already be a well optimized game. Basically, due to how the consoles are designed, it should be easy to get most of the optimization due to the platform early in the development cycle. It's true over time that they should be able to improve the client via optimization. But this won't be due to the PS4 vs the Pc; this will be because they figure out better ways to do what the client needs to do.

The only real advantage over the PC that the PS4 client will have is a known hardware configuration. But, as many people have pointed out from a hardware stand-point the PS4 is a mid range pc at best. In general both of the new consoles are rather low-end vs PC's compared to what we have seen from older console generations.

mmm thats about what i get with my gtx 780 on max as well, nvidia needs to release better drivers for ffxiv...but nvidia doesnt seem to notice this game or something lolz. Uhmm if you want a fps increase with no noticeable visual difference, turn Real-Time Reflections off. Bam instant fps increase and more fps if you're 5760x1080 and such.

i play triple monitor, 30 fps in town on 3 screens and 40 on one screen so hrmm. cpu is about 50% load(i5 3570k @4.3)
EDIT: btw from what i observed during peak and off time hours, its the number of players in your fov that lowers the framerate so much, among other things, i get higher fps with a few players, maybe 70-80fps in same area lol
EDIT 2: the fps figures are estimates of what i seem to remember, could be a bit higher or lower

I run an i7 930 as well, however mine is overclocked to 3.8ghz and getting 61 FPS
however the reason for this is because performance is NOT just based on CPU clock or GPU... or even the both of them combined
its a mix of the entire system, ranging from cpu, gpu, ram, hdd/sdd, mobo, monitor, cooling, software, OS, heck even the ambient temperature of the room your in place a part in performance.

In your screenshot you don't have many players in screen, you need 100 in view. Try prime time, stand on top of hill facing crystal and zoom out.
