Issue is and I know you more than likely ignored this on purpose - you can't need if your class can't immediately use it even though you actually need it for another class. I honestly wish SE went with their own system for loot. :\

Had this happen way too many times :/ Usually it's when a healer hits need on a piece of gear I actually needed as blm, but just because it has like 2-3 mnd on it, they're able to hit need -.- One time back at lvl 34, a whm in my pt got 3 pieces of battlemage in 1 run. He didn't even equip it.... I've also had a 50 whm, in lvl 30 gear during Brayflox, hit need on battlemage too, seriously?
What would be an amazing idea is if you were wearing better gear than what dropped, you shouldn't be able to hit need on it.
.... And how exactly are you supposed to get vanity sets then? Such as Battlemages, Foestrikers, Acolytes many others that look pretty awesome.Since under your proposal, I can't roll need on 50 Monk in Darklight for that Colliseum chestpiece, even though i want it for vanity purposes, and no one else can quip it in the group, it just goes to the void then i suppose?
No, no, no. The system is fine as it is.
Need = Your current class/role can equip it.
Greed = Your current class cannot use it, but you want it for an alt job/seals/Materia
Pass = You don't want or need this at all. (Or cant roll because unique)
That WHM in lvl 30 gear needing on Battlemage is fine. He was likely using the gear for Materia Soulbinding because he wanted to make some Gil, and also wanted Battlemages for when we get Vanity slots.
Unique appearance found nowhere else? Check.
That makes it a candidate for a vanity set. And I am just as entitled as you to roll need for it if i don't have it, for that purpose. Which is what it boils down to.
You have a purpose in equipping it for stats.
I have a purpose in equipping it for appearance.
Your purpose is not of greater or lesser importance to my purpose. I also have 3 other jobs i can use that set piece for.
And if I'm there on a class that can roll need on it, and i don't possess it, you're damn straight I'm rolling need on it. I worked just as much for any given drop as you did.
If you want specific drops, for a specific reason, be it stats or vanity and you aren't on the right class for it, just say so. I've never met a DF party that didn't just let me have the Greed roll if i specifically requested it.
A 'vanity set' is any gear with an appearance I like. Hell, i love most of the Raptorskin set, and keep it in my bags for strolling around town. That makes it a vanity set, not to you, but for me.
Bottom line is, if you want something, you do the dungeon on the required class to Need roll it as a way to mostly guarantee you will get it. Or you run with a premade group with the intent for you to pick up that item.
The system is fine, you just need to play with better people. Playing a PUG doesn't mean you can get butthurt and demand SE make more 'rules' for gear ninjas because you didn't get something you wanted. It is a thing everyone has dealt with from time to time, and honestly, won't you be running the dungeon again?
thing is.. people would still abuse the system. they'd just go into the instance with lvl 15 gear or something...
why of course. but that's the thing. people will ALWAYS abuse these systems. the situation right now is that people will hit need as soon as they see they CAN hit it. need no longer means what it actually means (that you NEED something)
it means 'hey your class can - technically - use this so you might as well just grab it even if you wear gear 10 lvl higher.
surely that would still happen if need wasn't locked to 'right class', but then at least everybody would have the chance to ninja with equal opportunity.
I see way more ninja-looting in this game than I see in games where need is not blocked. and I think some people don't even do it on purpose. they probably really think that need means they need it and don't even pay attention to what they're actually rolling for. I'm fairly sure the real problem isn't even the 'ninja looter' who will just need for seals or whatever, but the people new to MMOs who don't know the 'old school' need-greed-pass system.
