You couldn't be more wrong, literally, every word of that statement is wrong.
Ever play Rift? You have about 100 skills at max level, and you can mix and match them to create your own personalized character. The only thing linear about it is you follow the main quest line, but even then, it's different depending on what class you are.
In fact, most MMO's are not linear, you have a choice, your character is can be something different than everyone elses...
In FF14, every single person has the same exact skills. You can not customize your character except cosmetically. ASS
this game is just a joke. A bad bad joke
Yes, the cross-class skill system is really boring with little to no choices and adds essentially nothing to the game. If the cross-class skills were given out for free to every class(the main used ones, not the optional ones NO ONE will ever pick) no one would tell the difference. It needs removed, or overhauled, subjobs were a much better system than this.
You didn't even get into Conj, SMN, or SCH ones. Oh man I get protect, aero, swiftcast..
Honestly, I don't run as my jobs because of the very thing you've mentioned. Does that mean I suck? No, job is just a special feature that you can freely use as the attached class. As for linear... again, do you know what that means? XIII was the 'so linear it makes rulers look like warped sticks' game, where you didn't have subquests until Gran Pulse and once you left Gran Pulse you never saw another subquest ever again. XIV is full of quests, some just need to be unlocked through progression in the main story, but once you did they were everywhere. The reason the main story progresses as it does is because it's the main story. One story connecting everything in the game. It was like this in XI, the story quests each feeding into the next story quest. Not sure what you were expecting.
I dont think skills from other classes were suppose to chain off each other. It wouldn't make sense if you can chain skills from a different class that are not on your main. Makes no sense. And I can't believe you are comparing GTA5 to an MMO. lolwut?
Do you honestly think Rift doesn't have optimized builds? Just because it has more options doesn't mean most of them are worth anything. In every MMO ever cookie cutter eventually takes over and narrows down the choices no matter how many options there are. At that point only the terribads who don't know any better use "unique" builds.
Also, linearity in games refers to content. In a linear game you have to follow a certain path while in a non-linear game you have much freedom in choosing in which order you tackle content.
