How to meld materia, filling in questions

Each combination that I've tried has said Armorer is required, though I will continue to try more. If this is true though it's a moronic system. If the person saying the craft level must be the same level as the gear you are melding into and you saying each combo requires a different DoH class and are both correct that would require someone wanting to meld to level 30 gear to also up all his crafts to 30 which isn't a quick or cheap process. I'll have to test it of course, but this is a terribly inefficient materia system if it is as you two say :(

Anyway, Ill update the OP when I find the definitive answer now that I know of a few routes to go about trying.

With the amount of RMT spam that's cluttering up /shout, and the size and chattiness of my FC, I can't imagine not keeping /shout and /yell on a separate tab. I'd go absolutely insane.

But another thing to keep in mind on this is that /shout only reaches the zone you're in. People don't seem to congregate in the cities as much as they do in other games. They're out wherever their current level range of FATEs are, or running dungeons, or whatever. I pretty much only go back to a city when I'm logging off, so I can get to in inn.

Gold spammers get to us on the legacy server too, but they talk in whisper rather than general. I can understand not wanting general chat to scroll your window if you're trying to talk to your party or FC but that's why we have chat tabs for different settings. Keeping it off when you're doing something that requires no real effort (say, batch crafting or waiting on a queue) it seems the right thing to pop in there and answer if you spot a question you know the answer to. Either way, I just thought it was rather disappointing considering how lonely and single-player-esque it makes this game feel. I expected a more helpful community in a Final Fantasy where people are generally older, more mature, more knowledgeable, and more willing to help. I've seen 13 year old kids in Tera being a thousand times more helpful than this entire in-game community which is just a terrible thing to be able to truthfully say :(

To give her he much needed answer:
Each particular piece of equipment has both a class and a level tied to it for materia melding, it's in the equipment's information box!
For example, you levelled Alchemist to 19, so only equipment which is made by Alchemist (books and conjurer wands) with a melding requirement of at a maximum of L19 (Ash Wand and Engraved Leather Grimoire) can be melded by you.

Thanks, it doesn't mention any specific crafting skill or level of that skill sadly. My materia, carbonized matter, and item level already meet the requirements. It looks like some more experimentation is due as either my game is bugged beyond use or the system is still poorly understood and no one is bothering to explain it entirely :/

Thank you so much for finally providing a legit, comprehensive answer. This is exactly what I was looking for, and I apologize that I had not seen it in the item info box. As a lancer this apparently means I must level Leatherworking and Carpentry to meld. I very much appreciate the answer.

Sorry, I guess my post was a bit unclear there. I didn't mean to say that you can meld any item with any class. You still need to be an armorer to meld items that are made (and repaired) by armorers. However, you don't need to do the quest again as an armorer to gain access to the meld skill with that class. Once your armorer has the appropriate level, you can meld right away.

I think you'll get the hang of it after melding a few items. At least to me the system makes perfect sense as it is. (Aside from the fact that low- and midlevel materia seems completely pointless.)

You have to have a DoH class levelled to 19 to take the melding quest. Once the quest is completed, you have the generic ability to meld materia. However, to meld a piece of materia to a *specific* piece of gear, you will *also* need to meet the class/level requirements for melding materia to that gear, which requirement is stated right on the gear's description. This will be the same class that is required to make the gear in the first place, and the required level will rise with the gear's level.

Lets continue with questions.

I just found that, even though I have the correct DoH class, sufficient level and proper items, melding wouldnt add any status increase. You can meld the item, but it will show as "red", with information such as Mind + 0.
It's tool tip tells you that the chosen item level is too low to maximize Materia full potential.

That's the issue I'm running. I have a empty 8 slots, could add ONE materia with +spell casting (and none for mind). The second one would simply go red and tell me it won't add any extra benefit.

From some info I gathered, it seems your item has some limit of what status it can get, so if it's base int in the said gear is already in a certain threshold, you can't surpass it with more materia.
If someone can confirm this, could you also tell me HOW I found out what's this so called stats cap on items?

That is true, the stat caps on the items are related to the slots they are and what it's item level is, so every body slots with the same item level will have the same stat caps.
The stat caps take into account the item's innate stats already.

Currently the only way to figure out what the stat caps are on items is experimentation, thankfully the game warns you before you try what the cap is.
