Keeping your gear repaired and materia melded seems like a party aspect of the game. Perhaps that's why people are running gil deficits? I could be wrong but I think repairs by friends might do a lot to alleviate the lack of gil for repairs concern.

As someone who personally suffered from this in FFXI I agree wholeheartedly!
It's easy to complain about the amount of solo content now when everyone's trying to do the same thing all at the same time, but if they seriously want this to be a game that lasts longer than a couple of years then mandatory content needs to be either soloable or something you can do through DF groups. It's not fair to lock people out of progression simply because they aren't up to speed with the majority of the game's population.
I didn't mean it in an insulting or snarky way, I should have elaborated. I was just saying certain classes take waaaaaaaaay longer to DF that others. As for LS and FC, I agree that they are useful, but people arent always on at the same time. All in all I think that we need to wait at least till patch 2.1 comes out with the rest of the basic content before we can really decide one way or another.
My peeve regarding solo/party is that, if you're starting a new character with a friend, there's a very high chance you can't play together until level 15. If one wants to go for white mage, and the other warrior, there's no way to start together without one sacrificing their main class right away. Other than that, I feel fates pull away from the party play as there's little to no teamwork involved in them.
Mass Multiplayer Online is simply that.. It means there are alot of players playing the same game online.. We dont have to be cooperating on the same things to be playing the same game online.. Even if there was no party play at all it would still be an MMO. A sorry one but still a MMO.
It'd be nice if the main quest line was more like LOTRO's. The content was designed for 5 person groups but if you solo or do it with smaller groups you get a buff that makes the content doable no matter the number. That really would've been the best way to handle the story content IMO.
I was already rushed to view the cut scenes during the primal battles. I would hate for the entire story to be me just skimming it because people are impatient. Storyline being mostly solo was good.
GW2 story contents are also doable for both solo & groups (cutscenes can only be skipped by the host), & ppl still only invite their friends to help them, it's certainly more fun & no side effect at all, apart from ppl getting ahead of their story quests at lower levels, but FF14 quests are level-locked so I don't see any issues at all... But I doubt SE would decide to fix it, since it'll be too much work, & ppl will stop caring once they're done with the story anyways...
since she's your wife, you could like, go do the story missions together all the way and wait while you each take turns in the instance. :)

I get what your saying. I don't want to be FORCED to group for the main story. I would be fine with FF-XI forced grouping except on the story. I would rather do that on my own time without other idiots yelling at me for watching cutscenes, taking the time to read, ect.
