Well.. What I did was I started in Ul'dah on my 50 GLD. Once i got there, I switched to my lowest job (archer) and did all the quests around there with that class. Started at 5, got it to 15. Now I'm in Limsa for the quest to get my airship pass. Going to pick up arcanist there, level it to 10 then finish the airship pass quest. That gives me all the classes up to at least 10, and fairly spread out over levels.
What I did was start with my lvl 50 CNJ (this was in phase 4 by the way). I didn't do any quests except the lvl 1, 5, and 10 class quests. This allowed me to join other guilds. I then tried to take the ferry to Limsa to unlock Arcanist. The ferry wasn't working (I later figured out that the ferry doesn't start running until you get airship access which makes the ferry kind of useless) so I just did the main story quests as my lv 15 PUG until I go airship access. I then went to Limsa and grabbed Arcanist. I am now doing all the Gridania quests as Arcanist.
