Wow very cool find, I am going to have to check out Camp Brittlebark if I can make it there. I agree with you. It sounds like the Empire attacked them.

I think I know the area you're referring to. I've tried going to areas on the Coerthas map in particular that look like they might zone (based on how they appear on the map) to another area, if nothing else just to get the message saying "You can't enter that area" just to confirm my suspicion. If i'm not mistaken though, there was a horde of redwing keds flying around up there and I couldn't make it past them to see, lol believe me I tried a lot :D.
The place where the battle in the CG intro is most definitely Mor Dhona, what with all the crystals/aetheryte scattered across the land, as well as the fact that in the middle of the lake is The Keeper(which is Bahamut) twisted around the airship that he took down in the battle(which took place from 10-15 years prior). The land in Mor Dhona is currently ruined due to the final "breath" of Bahamut, from which the physical manifestations of the other primals were brought forth.
The only city attacked by the Garlean Empire that we know of thus far is Ala Mhigo, which was the strongest of the Eorzean city-states. For reasons unknown(most likely due to their fleet's defeat at the hands of the dragons), the Garleans halted their assault after securing Silvertear Falls, which is apparently a valuable crystal vein, and have been doing nothing but spying on and spreading propaganda throughout Eorzea with their airships that you see flying around every so often.
Sharlayan is on the far west side of Adlenard near Dravania, the Farreach, and Abalathia's Spine. Chances are that there may have been conflict between them and the dragons, however the way Y'Shtola speaks about it in the Limsa plotline, it seems like there was more to the destruction of Sharlayan. As far as we know, the Garleans haven't made it that far yet.
Anyway there's a whole thread on all this stuff, so look it up if you want more plot clarification.
i dont think that the dragon in mor dhona is bahamut. in a recent interview, yoshida said he was going to implement bahamuts and other summons differently in ffxiv so that pretty much means that we haven't seen bahamut yet. it might have been a very powerful dragon, maybe bahamut's mistress or something lol, something like this will make him mad and he will side by you to help destroy garlean or something, would make a nice sidequest
It's pretty much accepted that it's Bahamut, given his status as "God of the Eidolons" in the rest of the FFverse and that the rest of the primal deities that are worshiped by the various beast tribes were brought into the Eorzean plane of existence through his "death".
As for summons working differently than they did in previous games, yeah they do work differently. They hate and want to kill us all. Play through the game story.
Spoilers:
I'm willing to bet it's a typo and that the guard is actually referring to Ala Mhigo: the storyline makes no mention of Sharlayan being in such a sorry state. In fact, the guys from Sharlayan that you meet during the missions don't act like their city is being invaded at all. They're just trying to see whether our cities would go to war against the Empire or not to avoid being destroyed. They definitely don't seem like it's already happened (correct me if I'm wrong).
Honestly I'm having a hard time caring about what the guard NPCs say, considering there's an NPC in Camp Bentbranch that welcomes you to Camp Black Brush...
