Erm, don't the contest rules state that the prize is non transferable..? Doesn't giving it to a friend count as transferring..?

That's a nine-syllable line by my count. To be as you're hearing it it would take a different Japanese spelling. Japanese pronunciation will adhere to their spelling, but it is possible it's as you say and they used incorrect spelling and now subject themselves to "incorrect" pronunciation for the sake of the Romanization.

My first Haiku. Very traditional. Unfortunately no comedy potential.
