The company I work for owns Crave Games (really bad games and I am in a different department but did get to playtest a few) and we still have a bunch of ps3 dev kits.
We haven't herd anything about ps4 dev kits yet but then again Crave isn't really up their on Sony's list.

People already have ps3's. Relying on everyoen to rush out and buy a ps4 would severaly limit their market.
-
Square Enix promised Final Fantasy XIV for PS3, and they want to keep their word. Make PS3 users waiting 1 more year would be just sadism.
-
They aren't making an mistake. In fact since they did make a version for the PS3 that will be released it will be incredibly easy to take that version and port it to PS4. However, they would be foolish to do that even though it would be the easy way to do things.
Regardless, the will probably wait a 1-2 years as PS4 establishes a new user base. All the while quietly working on a PS4 version. Making tweaks to the PS3 version to scale it so that it will run nicely and take advantage of the hardware in the PS4.
But in all honesty, it all depends on what Sony wants to do with their PSN network. If Sony decides to take the more closed route like Microsoft where Sony must host all game servers, Transactions must be done through their network and all profits would be recieved through their network. (And Sony does seem to be moving more and more in that direction!)
Then an MMO on the PS4 may be an impossibility like it is for the 360! Simply because of the network it runs through.
I only hope that Sony does not get that greedy. PSN is not nearly as robust as the Microsoft network in features and making such a move without being on par with Microsoft's LIVE! Would really hurt their profitability with the system.

It's never too early or late to release a port. I know people that basically converted their old PS2s into FFXI-Boxes. The only wrong move SE could make would be to double-down on the mistake they made with PS2: trying to make it permanently linked to development and thus holding back the game's potential for longer than it made use of it.
-
I don't think they are. Because, whenever PS4 does come out, the current PS3 version of XIV can always be updated to look better when it gets installed on PS4. Take advantage of its hardware when the time comes. Not like people would be forced to buy a whole new copy.
-
I think it's fairly obvious that XIV will be released for PS4, maybe not to start, but I'd bet that sometime in the PS4's life, we'll see FFXIV. I can even see "PS3 limitations!"
SE prolly had a devkit for awhile. It's a good way to test the Luminous Engine (for compatibility and stuff). But I'm not in the industry, what do I know lol

Yup ffxi was originally on the PS2 then it went to the 360 - same thing will be possible but the graphics should scale 100x better :)
-
They can easily port it to PS4. Yoshi-P said the game is scalable.
-
That depends on "ps3 limitations".
