I think I'm going to create a character tomorrow after work on the Phoenix server. Probably a Galka.

Can you choose a server upon character creation now or is still random chance?

I never played XI before, so I decided to give it a shot while the game is down. Started last week and I am now a lvl 18 thief on Quezacoatl! (Quiet, don't rain on my parade. :P)

My character is Gethyn, so if you see me, give me a shout! :D I am always for being friendly.

I was half thinking about getting FFXI.. I didn't know if a lot of people still playing.. ? How similar/disimilar is it to ffxiv?

FFXIV took a lot of game controls from XI, so it shouldn't be too bad of a transition.

For those of you who want to start anew, or want to use your old charas but missing expansions, there's a downloadable version on SE's XI site that will give you a code for all the expansions so far.

Rho or anyone else coming to Phoenix, befriend me ingame (character is Vilhem, how unique huh? :p) I should be on in the evening after class so we can all hang out. I've already started helping out a friend of mine who made a new chara :)

I'm in the process if retrieving my SE ID, I forgot what it was since it was separate from FFXIV. Hopefully it doesn't take too long.

Great idea!! I never played FFXI, think I'll go buy it and give it a whirl until FFXIV comes back online.

Does crafting still work the same? Is it still really slow? Do people still sell stuff in the starting towns? Is everything really expensive in the starting towns?

They linked all the Auction houses a few years ago to the Jeuno one. So the AH you view from Bastok Sandoria Windurst Norg etc are all Jeuno AH.

There's a new craft system called Synergy that's sort of like what we have on 14 in that you can use it to meld "evoliths" onto gear.

I remember evoliths before I left. I won't be doing that.

Leveling jobs seems to be much faster, how is leveling crafting classes. I remember it being incredibly tedious before. Should I not even bother this time around or is a viable option to keep costs down.
