Most likely will offer rewards - but while Yoshida personally really enjoys PvP he has conceded that the average FFXIV player is probably not as excited about it as he is.

LOL the only reason I am not looking forward to it is because in FFXI (I know another comparison) it wasnt done well and in most MMO I have found certain jobs beat out others leaving the PVP element down to the top tier jobs.. so I am not sure how you can make it balanced and fun at the same time.. I just dont see how that will be possible

Balancing will be, and always is, an extremely difficult task. So I can assure you that there will be issues.

I liked (shoot me for saying) WoW's battlegrounds CTF and such - the controlled environments were fun. Am annoyed by unrestricted full pvp like in Age of Conan though - always had max levels camping level noob areas or waiting for you to try and kill open world nm's.
