Unfortunately that only worked on the original PS3s, and then Sony removed backwards compatibility.

Both MS and Sony are pushing the current consoles as far as they can. I jsut hope this time around Sony uses better common sense with memory design and avaiability. The Memory has held it back for many developers. Just as logn as the PS3 doesn't hold back ARR like the PS2 held back XI to keep content similiar across the platforms. The 360 version of XI was actally a scaled PC version (complete with bugs at that point)., basically Emulated.
No doubt they will continue scalign down visuals and draw distance as well as effects for the PS3 version but doing SE art magic to make it still look good. However they shouldn't limit PC's that are much higher speced as a result.
Ps4? That depends on the core design. If similair to the PS3, they ccan use the base tools used for the PS3 and upscale for the higher memory and GPU, which means Opengl limitations. If a different design, they may need to rework the tools for it, and decidde if it is warrented based on units sold and peopel interested.
I don't think even single player developers are worrying about the PS4 atm lol
The point of this thread wasnt to worry specifically about the PS4, I was more of using that as an example since that will most likely be Sonys next gaming platform, but more of can they upgrade things like their servers and graphics, and UI and things like that as time goes on and things get upgraded.
And also they DO have to worry about things like that if they want this game to last for years to come like FFXI!
well the games specs are locked in now for ps3 till they stop supporting it. just like FFXI was locked into ps2 specs, now ps2 is gone ffxi still got no upgrade not even for the textures.
should put attention on the Wii-U since thats the next system coming out.
They've said the engine is easily scalable in a way that prevents the ps3 from holding back the game. Or at least that's how I understood it.
