I hate to do this but i support mages having weapon skills. They obviously wouldnt be damage heavy but with more focus on enhancing or debuffing the enemy. We will start with 1000tp with no need to be close to gain tp anyway so why not add a little flavor to mages.

I loved Summoner soloing in XI with staff they have that MP Drain ability which made soloing a lot easier without running out of MP I mean its justifiable for that sometimes on FFXIV i wish i had a melee ability while out of MP and near death and mobs at 5% and just that little bit to finish it off o.O/
