Eh, that's the one part I'm actually really positive about. We already have quite a few examples of that ingame as-is (e.g. Paladin Atonement chain, tons of PvP filler combos on basically half the classes), and they're fantastic compared to having them as 3 separate buttons, and at no loss of depth (Paladin is the craziest example, since their 1-2-3 is separate for historical reasons but their 4-5-6 is an autocombo, so you have direct comparability).
They could of course overdo it, sure. Remains to be seen. But then again, many of the best combat systems in gamings have extremely slimmed-down input complexity, to allow for the fight design + intricacies of skills to provide depth. So I guess looking beyond FFXIV in particular I kinda like the direction, anyways?
One of many satisfying Blue Mage skills to use is Chelonian Gate. It is a 20% self mit. But if the enemy attacks into it (which of course they will, they're on a timeline) then the skill procs another skill called "YOU FOOL YOU'VE ACTIVATED MY TRAP CARD", which does 1000 potency damage.
Every tank and healer has a 10% mit on a 60s cooldown. Usually for tankbusters or people with vuln stacks. But Chelonian Gate feels so much better to use because of the cool counter attack. I even once said to one of my friends: "Why is it so much more fun to get tankbustered as a BLU, than as a real tank?"
Then fanfest Paladin happened. And not only is the counter there, but they managed to add skill expression by giving you bonus damage on the counter if you play chicken with the timing. That's two things this game needed AND its fun!
I don't think giving Dragoon access to Diamondback is going to survive into the final game. But that's the kind of thing I want to see at least, tried.
