Are we expecting TO MUCH from 8.0?

Big changes aren't needed.
SE just needs to roll back on track like they were before.
More content, less mog station items, more rewards in game. More voice acting, less chore quests. Job balance and job identity, no more 2 minute meta.

8.0 will define future of this game. Either it will be reborn and get back it's glory, or it will slowly dwindle down into maintenance mode from there. What will it be - it's now up to SE.

If you're expecting a complete overhaul of the gameplay, content patches and reward structures, then yes you're expecting too much. They might change a few things here and there but things are mostly just going to be the same.

Why would anyone be expecting much from 8.0? Every expansion follows roughly the same content formula down even to its minor patches and by 8.0 I think everyone gets that.

They said there will be changes and I do expect changes but I don't believe they will be that drastic, because they've also talked about the future of the game, such as preserving the past content, the tomestone system being important, even now they are redoing old dungeons still. There obviously are not these plans to remake the game like some people want to believe.

My expectations are on the floor. If Doomtrain in 7.4 is a harbinger of a dedicated VIII nostalgia trip (after the dedicated IV, IX, and XI nostalgia trips) even after Eden (which at least had a better balance between original elements and callbacks), I'm probably done.

Nah, because all I want is a great story, with great new characters, and an awesome new journey in an awesome new place. That's a normal thing to want from a game.

Otherwise, I'm happy with pretty much everything else.

Honestly, my biggest criticism with 14 right now is how much the development cycle has been stretched out for content updates and expansions.

Pretty much. I think they know they cannot afford another blunder after how bad their subs have dropped.
I am seriously hoping they sit down, take a look at what was so successful years ago and then try to replicate that, as well as adapt to quality of life options other games are offering. The game needs fresh blood, not just the veterans to stay or return, and the new player experience currently is just not cutting it.

There's a lot of factors to be considered and I hope, for selfish reasons, that they catch themselves before they jump off the deep end entirely.

I have to echo this thought.

I definitely ain't expecting much. Maybe other people are? Idk. Not me. I've been playing this game for over a decade at this point and I feel like the game has carried a good chunk of what I like to call "design momentum" with it over the years. Simply put, it's hard to expect them to make any utterly insane crazy changes in an expansion. And yes, I realize that I'm talking about the same game that "rose from its ashes" with 2.0. I just don't know if they have it in them to pull something like that off again.

The devs are more than welcome to try, though.

I sure hope this admittance of complacency in the team means they will make some moves here and there. I think they have it in them (they made ARR, they made ShB), they just got too comfy in their laurels to realize how much they've been messing up until it exploded in their faces, despite many warning them of it well before the biggest signs were there.


I like to think they cannot afford to make another flop expansion, so let's hope they're cooking something good ^^

It feels like expecting anything good is expecting too much. They have played it safe and iterated on the same formula for so long (while sanding off anything out of place until everything is linear and all jobs are similar) that it is difficult to believe that they'll do any remotely profound and risky change.
The silver lining is that they can only surprise us in a positive way.

The problem is that 1.0 was just a failed project that didn't mean much to SQEX and there was probably no expectation of success so they were free to do whatever they wanted, whereas today FFXIV is (one of?) the main source of revenue of SQEX, so there is probably a lot of pressure to play it safe and not "break" it (even though we can argue that it's already broken to some extent)

On the contrary, there was tons of pressure to not ruin the FF name with such a catastrophically bad game. If they didn't care about the franchise's reputation, they simply would have trashed the whole thing and moved on.

There's a lot of playing it safe now because the game is very successful, but YoshiP has already admitted to the team's complacency, the need to change in the future and get back in track. Of course, we will see what he truly meant when we get there, but I am hopeful without any specific expectations besides what's already been announced.
