Honestly most of the time teams at least on EU in my experience do the proper decision to go after the leading team especially when pinged in alliance chat. But sometimes, like yesterday in one of the games I had, it's literally the map and the mode that was constantly working against us: the map kept spawning one node in Seal Rock just between the two losing teams (ours and the 2nd in score), while it kept feeding the leading team with 2 nodes among which one was S rank... The one node in the middle of the two losing team acted as a gigantic bait to keep both busy fighting each other instead of telling them to go fight the winner while the winner grew incredibly fat.
I actually do thing rng is healthy in the game mode, so I don't know what else could be done against this, but perhaps favoring S rank nodes on Seal Rock and Onsal between the losing teams would be better than adding one for free to the leading team. One thing that can also push teams to fight the winner is to have nodes spawn only between the winner and the losing teams, and none between the losing team.
Maybe it would be rigging the game too much though, for essentially I do believe at least on EU (Light) people target the proper teams in the majority of times. So perhaps that's just a player problem, but it can be compounded by bad node spawns.

This idea needs to be buried.
Playing for second is infuriating. However, playing for second is not a crime and therefore should not be a penalty. It's a skill issue on one side that can't deal with it, and it's a mentality issue on the other side that's choosing to play like this. I cannot find another way of saying this. How is that any different from the 2 teams bullying the 3rd party, keeping the competition close between themselves, and blaming the 3rd party (who's mentality is most likely broken and the overall morale close to nonexistent) from one of the losing teams? If you see that the second place team is ready to send you into the shadow realms, you as a team need to act accordingly and find a way to punish them for trying it. I don't see that happening any time soon though for various reasons.

Spitepushing has been in frontlines for as long as i've played it. With regulars it's usually going after the same opposing group. For casuals it gets triggered by minute things. For some people one push on them is enough to trigger them focussing you the entire game. Others are more sensible. Some get better with time and stop doing the "we don't like the colour yellow" meme, or "lets fight yellow for the 2nd place". This happens sometimes.
Saying all that knowing who the weak team are is useful in building BH, and isn't cheating. If they manage to balance building BH off of the weak team and then get the lead - it's a viable strategy. However, if over focussed it can backfire that 3rd place is hunting you the rest of the game.
In an ideal world 3rd place can lock in and build off of 1st and 2nd place fighting each other to control more of the map and leverage a lead - this happens quite often when I solo lead "weak" teams. They, in theory, shouldn't be both teams' target whilst being in 3rd. If they do, it's usually because your team is VERY weak so it's faster than capping nodes.
I somewhat address this in my thread i started earlier this year.

everyone who says that match throwing doesn't happen is outing themselves as someone part of the discord servers that are part of the match throwing, they try to gaslight us into thinking it doesn't happen

It also happens due to "spite" of many players. People in frontline regularly do emotes on your dead body or if they feel that you targeted them too much they think its "personal affair". So now those players will always try to catch your team regardless if its a lose to them.
