Well, sadly they've already said this. When 2.0 was first being announced Yoshi-P said they would continue on a grand storyline to bring the current world to an end, while ushering in the new one, to tie it all together. But its going to be a once in a lifetime sort of event, just as the Goobbue was a once in a life time thing, either you got it while it was available or you miss it forever. So something is going to happen and it will have an expiration time on how long it will be available to us before they have to finally hit the kill switch and everything goes down.
I believe in an interview it was said that A Realm Reborn is currently on schedule for a 2013 launch. It has also been mentioned that servers are shutting down soon - probably some time in September or early October. It's going to be much longer than a month of downtime with that in mind.
Seems like the servers could be down for quite some time. Three months, five months, maybe more.
We will all survive :) The new Square Enix Fall Lineup (Sleeping Dogs + Hitman), Tales of Graces F, One Piece Pirate Warriors, endless new blu-ray releases and walks in the brown, red, yellow colored forests with our loved ones will help us to withstand our anti-social MMO life we have.
Their perspective of the word soon doesnt bother me, not like next week.
I said it somewhere else, I could see them going into alpha testing now, tweaking it, polishing off some of the things people have mentioned from Gamescom interviews, pic reveals and even the videos floating around online. Closed Beta will begin after that, with XIV players taking a priority on the que list for that and open beta later on. I would forsee CB lasting a month or two, get actual player feedback, continue tweaking, bug fixes, glitch works, etc and about the same time they're ready to start OB, shut the servers down and run OB while they transfer data, run stress tests with more participants than CB allowed and run it for as long as they need too until all the data is transferred completely, no major meltdown errors in the way and start distributing the actual ARR client software at that point. So really..I dont forsee a true shut down until Mid-Late October.
