Why is FFXIV using rubber bullets in the wild west?

I heard the pirate rap in my head when I saw the rubber bullets

The Garleans used...real bullets. Quintus loads and shoots himself with...a real bullet. Hell just very shortly after this duel, the attack on Tulyollal happens. You know...where people are getting mowed down...by real bullets. But duels in the wild west? Sorry, devs decided that shooting something with real bullets without the intent to kill whatever they're flying towards during the main story is crossing the line, so the American cats get rubber bullets for their duels.

I read it as a tradition used to settle things between town members, when just talking it out won't work. It's meant as a parody to the old shootouts.



No one is going to be OK just killing someone whenever there's a dispute, it's not the actual wild west.

wasnt the point about these duels that they scare people enough to not do it and work stuff out peacefully? i dont see how the rubber bullet work with that setting.

It's funny that they even mentioned rubber bullets at all because the scene plays out non lethally anyways. There was literally no point to bring up they use rubber bullets because it takes out all the tension, what little there was anyway, out of the scene and it also makes the fact that he shot the gun out of the guy's hand less impressive because there was very little risk of him killing his opponent anyway. It was such a bizarre decision and all it did was make the scene exponentially worse.

I just chalked it up as the characters didn't want to kill anybody.. I know it's hard to consider that.

It was told this was to settle disputes and that your reputation was based on whenever you can emerge as the winner of them.
This was explained that rep was everything around the frontier towns of Shaaloani. And once you lost face, you can pretty much pack up around there.

This is Koana's corner of development with the ceruleum, so having possibly capable people duel themselves into the grave over petty things would be counter-productive for him.

The rest is just a tacked on parody of the Wild West of the late 19th Century, coming with accent and all.

I mean... Technically the dragons and Ishgard did do that just in a slightly different way. The founding Ishgardians ate dragon eyes and in turn the dragons ate Ishgardians (at least Hraesvelgr, I assume in combat others may have eaten people too). Then some of the Ishgardians also drank dragon blood.
