I mean if we get unrestricted shard travel to the remaining 4/5 shards (we already have access to the first and Alexandria if that is or isn’t the shattered remnants of the 12th or not and while we can traverse the 13th there is no aetheryte we have access to) it’s going to be because of that key so I think that’s a big enough plot point
I really hate the DT story but I agree here.
The key is a very good plot devise for the future.
The story itself also gives an interesting tidbit of Alexandria really was from the destroyed shard of the lightning calamity (which was even implied by I think Krile and the time dilation stuff actually makes it possible for the Lalas to travel there after the calamity).
What exactly happens to a shard after a rejoining?
Is is completely destroyed or is there something left and the Ascians just went with „eh Zodiark can fix that after he is free“ which their handling of the thirteens implied.
The DT story sucks in my opinion but I disagree that it doesn‘t that uninteresting things for the future.
I think they have a base plan around it, e.g., with the subtlety of the key sharing the same insignia as the Azem Crystal, this could have some implications which they may explore later down the line. I know the Hydaelyn/Zodiark saga is done, but I wouldn't put it past them to elude to this being part of the reason why the Azem didn't join in on anything.
This is also opens to going around on the 13th, and back to the first later down the line with looking into the Empty and restoring the 13th. I don't think they've done this whimsically, but I think they will only do subtle teasers, and will change the path of their intended story according to that.
Depending on what the rejoinings actually did, something may be done about those..?
