That is, "Dark" versions of the main towns overrun with mobs...BUT, the big thing there was you could choose how you wanted to move around and what mobs to attack (or not). Maybe a solo duty with one would be interesting.
Oddly enough, FFXIV and FFXI lore could actually overlap quite well regarding the Shadowlord.
TL;DR version if anyone cares:
Pre-story, a group of adventurers were adventuring when a member of the party betrayed one of their own. The betrayed hero was a Galka, and he became overwhelmed with grief, rage and sadness...which caused his body to change into a demonic form (Crystals were involved).
He sympathizes and leads beastkin against the allied races in that game's first MSQ series.
It's not unlike Dynamis (the FFXIV emotion power version this time), or even Primal summoning.
