The sort of pvp we have now was invented in response to open world pvp being the worst thing ever. Open world pvp is horrible. First there was nothing but open world pvp from like 2000 to 2010ish and it wasted the first decade of pvp. It's horrible and will always be horrible. Nobody has made a good open world pvp game. When somebody does, maybe SE can copy it. It will never happen.
Either people have no idea how bad open world pvp is, or they are trying to sabotage the game by always suggesting it. If you really don't know how bad it is, that dream you are chasing isn't real, nobody knows how to make a good open world pvp game. Frontlines are better than any big battle you will ever have in any comparable-to-FFXIV open world mmo pvp game. Crystalline Conflict is better than any small battle you will ever have in any comparable open world pvp game.
Open world pvp doesn't have to mean "big battles". Wow's open world pvp was great when blizzard didn't go out of its way to sabotage it, and when it didn't take the form of dozen of players trying to zerg one another. If your idea of open world pvp is a massive zerg fest (ala frontline, btw) then respectfully you have no idea what makes pvp good. It isn't about creating large scale spectacular events, and I think it's this misconception that makes large scale pvp (open world or instanced, it doesn't matter) fail.
I know for a fact that world pvp can be great, because I had great world pvp experiences in wow.
Open world PvP in FFXIV would have to be Very limited.
The examples I would look to from WoW that could be examples for limited implementations would be perhaps Gurubashi Arena, or the Dalaran Sewers. Both certainly had their flaws, but there was a lot of fun that came out of it, and it was completely optional content. A simple moshpit where any who enter are free to be fought, preferably with the caveat of light/full parties being disallowed to enter.
