They made some QOL updates in 5.1 to try to get more players into crafting and gathering. It worked pretty well. Not everyone was happy with the increased competition and decreased difficulty.

Welcome to the information age. The only reason more weren't doing it before was because it took way too long to level. The information had still been out there for those who were willing to look.

Macros won't help you unless you are geared with HQ Gear and pentamelded, or bought gear with scrips every 10 levels.
You sometimes have to wing it.
