A notepad isn't a bad idea, but they can do better.
The first improvement would be a spreadsheet, just a basic one that can do simple math. It wouldn't be hard to implement. Obviously, you can take notes in a spreadsheet if you want.
The next upgrade would be to offer an in-game web browser. This would let you take notes or run your spreadsheet using a web-based service as well as giving you access to web resources like Garlond Tools, Aryalla's, Lulu's, Icy Veins, Discord, Reddit, X, and so on.
Now I don't want any of these for myself: my spouse and I are PC players and always have at least a second monitor available. But given how heavily we rely on those second monitors, I can see people with only one monitor, such as console users, could use a way to do what I do on another monitor in the game instead.
A notepad would be very nice for crafting purposes... Could write down in-game all the things you need to go get...
You can create your own private Fellowship and use the message board as a note pad.
Some features I would want in an in-game note pad: being able to link multiple items on a page, being able to link multiple map coordinate flags on a page, and being able to link multiple crafts on a page.
Whatever notepad the devs would add to the game isn't going to be as good as whatever notepad you use outside of the game. Spending time on this instead of other things would be time wasted.
Another existing feature that's close is /echo. It'll send the text to your chat window, and you can separate it into it's own tab. I use this when making harvesting lists.
The primary downside compared to OP's request is this does not save between sessions.
Well you are missing the point then, it need to be as simple as Notepad outside of the game and save to an .txt file or similar that you then even outside of the game can open up in notepad or similar program to add to as well and the likes, I am suggesting this due to that is is a very simple and helpfull feature.
And also what do you mean with as good as whatever outside of the game... if you opened notepad, only thing you can see in it is that you can write plain text in it and that is pretty much it.
It is brilliant for adding notes inside the game, and the bonus to it that you can further edit it outside the game, console users would benefit from it as well, it wont take any server ressources either as it would be a local file on a local system.
You get rid of having to tab outside the game, or switch to another screen as well.
I thought about this when going after rare animals in the island sanctuary because when I came across one I would jot down the time of day, weather, and position. I know there is an outside source with all that info, but that takes away all the fun of going after them.
Then I noticed the new crafting recipes guarantees a capture, and I start thinking, "FFS SE, do you have to effin simplify every single effin thing?"
Anywho, notepad.... count me as a yay.
