It did and was big in BFA because it rewarded gear for one faction. However in shadowlands I don't think I ever saw one person with it on, I never saw anyone even flag. WoW forums and reddit have been calling it dead for awhile, now apparently season the discovery they've turned to ashenvale into a PVP zone idk how that working

No way, letting a random level 90-100 come gank you and camp your corpse for fun while leveling an alt job or an alt character is not fun at all. No one has fun with systems like these except the trolls who overgear, group up, and then camp noobs all day trying to farm angry DMs.
There's a reason why games moved away from it and why when given the option, people won't use it.

Well, I don't know where you experienced that, but it's not obligatory with OW team (btw, have experienced all of the above at one time of the other, and enjoyed when we grouped up and got rid of them). There are numerous ways to prevent/minimize higher levels mixing with newer players or much lower levels, ranging from zone limits, to DR or reward changes depending on level differences, etc. It's been done in more than one game.

Not to mention - having PVP-specific zones is also another option, even if it's done for specific days or times of day.

Not that I'm optimistic that Square would do any of this given the size of their PVP team.

Just like in old WoW, people did PvP because you can get alt gear and rewards for both leveling and endgame raiding. Everything ties to that

I'm picturing Bozja but with either free for all pvp or you can pick from two teams. That would be hectic and I would be there for it.

How would you determine who is an ally and who is an enemy? There are no playable factions in the game that are in opposition to each other. If you were thinking free for all, you're going to have a very hard time getting players to opt in and most of those who do are going to be more interested in hit-and-run tactics against lower level players than fair fights.

This game just isn't designed for world PvP and trying to introduce it at this point wouldn't sit well with the majority of the player base because even if you're not directly involved in the fighting, it's usually disruptive to other reasons for being in the zone. Create special zones just for it and it stops being world PvP.

Better to get the world PvP in a MMO that is designed for it if you can find one where it still thrives.

Open pvp wouldn't be very welcome in general, I think, but I would like to see wolve's den style dueling available in the open world. I don't think even that would happen, but I'd like it, and I think it would unironically help make overworld zones feel at least a bit more alive.

The problem with making PvP a big deal in this game is that... all the Grand Companies are friends and everyone eventually become friends. You also can't align with anyone who isn't a friend in the first place - just the starting 3 Grand Companies.

The PvP lore in this game started out as literally playfighting over a piece land with historical significance. You are just incapacitating eachother like it's an airsoft game. It amounts to just organized military exercises and training.

It could still come across as organized military training if it were in specific areas, maybe.

But SE doesn't do much in the open world because they seem to like controlling the amount of players so that there aren't too few and there aren't too many, which instanced PvP achieves.

An example of what can happen if you don't control the amount of players is hunt trains and how the amount of people can obliterate the hunts in an unintended way.

If there would be open world PvP, it should be specific zone with goals and other achievements. Like hold this hill for some time, etc. it should be more Olympics like and less horde vs alliance.

This is probably a whacky idea, but what if there was like a Eureka/Bozja-like zone, but for for pvp. Like it could be an endless game of capture the flag or something that players can enter, and leave at any time. It could be super casual, and sandboxy like old TF2 2Fort lobbies.
