I like AST being high APM though.
That said I have a 12 button mouse.
While I wouldn't mind some reduced actions, part of AST's "identity" is its high APM.

I agree. But one of my friends who plays AST has recently been running into pain with her wrist due to how the job is always active with oGCDs plus throwing out cards. That identity can be maintained through the oGCDs, but it needs to be structured better systematically so that we don’t stay on that treadmill too long. The 15s Divination window is a perfect example of this: Fitting your Minor Arcana, Star, Self-Buff, Cards, and damage all under one buff is difficult to manage with how AST is set up currently - it’s a little TOO busy.
Tbh while I'm empathic on the issue I feel like this is what can be considered the skill ceiling.
You don't have to give yourself carpel tunnel to clear content, you just aren't going to get a 99%
It really does come down to player choice on how much they want to commit to the ability of the class.
You used to be able to be very anal and micro manage the shit out of fairy on SCH, nobody did it though.
You can even micromanage Kardia on SGE, nobody does though.
I remember back when trick attack was some 10 seconds and the question was what abilities/skills are you going to hit, not what abilities are you going to miss.
Not so much since Endwalkers dropped but AST at its core without cards was just a knock off whm and you could clear content just fine being a knock off whm.

For real. I wish we would have the ability to use Minor Arcana pre-pull, same for Aetherflow. That would be one less oGCD to press during opener atleast.
AST doesn't actually have higher APM than in ShB. It averages at about 42 CPM at high end gameplay and averaged around the same in ShB.
The problem with Endwalker AST isn't too many button presses, it's simply too many buttons, a lot of which are unnecessary fluff that doesn't add much. Not only is the toolkit bloated with fluff and filler, it's also very orientated at frantically pouring everything into your 2 minute burst, to the point that Lightspeed needs to be used just to facilitate this rather than being used for movement.
It's not smooth, flowing, rewarding gameplay. It's a jumbled mess that feels hectic to play. It's not even high APM, many dps and even DRK/GNB have similar or higher CPM. The fact that even DNC has similar CPM and still feels comfy to play just goes to show the real problem is AST gameplay.
ast is a high apm burst phase followed by 2 minutes of nothing. div windows in endwalker are significantly worse than shb div windows. maybe its the same on average, but shb didnt have you use play+draw+play+draw+play+crown play+MA+crown play every 2 minutes in addition to divination.
Neither AST nor DRG are even the highest APM jobs in the game though.
No... but it did have Lightspeed into Sleeve Draw into Divination and then if you had all three seals + Sleeve Draw up at the start it was... Light Speed into Div into Sleeve Draw into changing each one into Lord/Lady with a long animation (before they got rid of the Lord/Lady animation thank the Twelve) so... progress?
