Why does it close the client?

That probably has something to do with the way they've chosen to go about their post.

Anyhow, OP, I would agree with Saraide, technical debt is the most likely reason. Especially with how they've had to do things in the ARR days, developing it with all hands on deck while also keeping 1.0 up in the meantime.

I found this game as a whole to be very fragile, literally anything can make it close/error out where other games can recover.

I made it a habit to just close every background application like steam or driver suites before launching FF14.

To reduce the 2002 chances, right? Because base design is what makes 2002 close your client, it isn't a Crash To Desktop kind of bug. (Although I admit I'm not sure about it.)

Problem is that the process for logging in involve a LOT of step that it really shouldn't... You have to Open Launcher, Put Password, Put OTP, Fail to Login because OTP refreshed, Put Password, Put OTP again and hope for no refresh, Load Game, Get Booted before being able to get in Queue, Repeat from start until you DO get in queue while having lost your spot because of all the faffing about.

When it could be just Get Booted from Queue, Character Select, Queue back in... But I guess we all gotta fight login bots? Is that even a thing, a bot for loging in?

This is absolutely the last thing I care about.

The Launcher closes once you get into the game regardless if you get booted out of the Client or not. I don't think that's actually a bad feature either, it's cleaning up after itself.

Although I'll admit that having a Launcher open where I don't have to input the password every time DOES also seem rather handy to have, I'll give you that.
