Will this game ever get open world pvp?

World PVP wouldn't work out real well in FF14 because the game and world design isn't built for that purpose.

A better route for FF14 would be more Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) inspired PVP. More specifically, DAOC-esque battlegrounds

If all goes as hoped ...then never :)

No it never will. And rightfully so.
It would drive away a lot of the community if it was openworld pvp.
a dedicated pvp server would become a meme and likely be mostly dead with a small select few lurking about complaining about how everything is dead. the game doesn't gravitate towards pvp and never will.

In WoW, that seemed to be a majority of actual world pvp.

People ganking lowbies or rogues taking people unaware while questing, or groups of people roving around and only engaging if they had superior numbers.

That's not to say no 'honorable pvp' ever happens but it's generally just people attacking lower levels etc and wanting easy kills, rather than people wanting free fights. After-all they had the arena and duel systems for those if they wanted it. I played on Emerald Dream from WOTLK to the end of MOP, and while ganking/griefing wasn't the 'only' thing people went for, it was certainly the majority of it.

I sincerely hope it NEVER gets open world pvp. It brings the worst out in people.

if you want open world pvp, plenty of offerings on the market for that playstyle and desire

FF xiv is not one of them

While I completely disagree with your view of OW PVP, that happens to be what OP is describing, however let's just say that I don't trust OP's motives in making this thread.

There are many reasons that people engage in OW PVP, ganking and twinking are part of the motives but OW PVP can also lead to some fun fights. It may not be something that you personally enjoyed in one specific game, that doesn't necessarily make it something that cannot be enjoyable in every game, however I believe it is one of the more difficult parts of game design.
