I originally belonged to DCUO and decided to give FFXIV a try since some friends were also on there. Spent about a day or two total during my trying it out. Then a year or so later, around the time Ninja was dropping, I decided to hop back over to play during one of DCUOs routine morning world maintenance. Since the world was down it would give me about an hour or so to play and by that time I already invested about 3 years on DCUO and was looking to move on without noticing it. Been playing XIV for about 7 or so years now, maybe more.

Mental aspect: Depression, solitude, anxiety, lack of fantasy
Routine aspect: Lack of an experience that is build for a long time...like an investment. I used to be a player of MMORPGs since...forever. Most of my favorites is already dead or dying. Then i started to play MOBAs like Dota2 (9k hours) and Smite until i got tired of it.
I didn't played 1.0 but i always followed the news...a flower had more pixels than your hair. From distance, FFXIV 1.0 was looking like a bad designed game with unoptimized code. Then i started to watch some videos and lives, i was attracted by how modern the HUD looked like, how the weather changes and how the water and wind affected our character.
After just the trial (64h) i bought the game...and in less than 1 week i brought shadowbringers to play as Samurai.
Two years later i think we can learn a little bit from the early age, the movement of our characters was more organic in 1.0 than now. -

Played the 1.0 Beta, then bought ARR on sale in 2014 still never really played it. But a friend from College got me into playing SHB when he wouldn't stop talking about it in class.

I always wanted to play Final Fantasy 11 Online when i had my playstation 2, but didn't have the means at the time to afford the online modem attachment and service required back in 2002 (that stuff was pretty expensive back then.)
So when Final fantasy XIV online 1.0 came along, i jumped at the chance with all my mmorpg buddies i had at the time... annnnnnnnnnnnnd, my piece of trash PC could barely run the beta client. XD
It wasn't until ARR beta that i had a gaming PC. And i've been here the whole time. Mostly here. :) -

A number of reasons, really:
- Back in 2013, I found myself thoroughly disillusioned with the direction of World of Warcraft.
- I'd been searching for a new MMO to invest in for a while, though none managed to pique my interest enough to invest on a long term basis. The exception to that was Wildstar, though that went the way of the dodo...
- I happened to have played pretty much every Final Fantasy game with the exception of Final Fantasy 3.
- My three favourite Final Fantasy games are FFIX, FFXII and FFVII. The latter two games, especially, seem to have a decent amount of inspiration in regards to FFXIV's world and aesthetics.
- I consider it to be an imperfect game in some ways and I do have my beef with a number of design decisions...but ultimately I consider it to be the best option on the market where MMO's are concerned at present.
- The soundtrack is pretty great, as is a lot of the concept art/zone design. -

3 reasons :
- I saw it had been redone and looked nice and fun so I wanted to try
- It's a Final Fantasy Fantasy title I hadn't play yet and I'm a Final Fantasy lover
- I played with friends because I'm not a MMO player so it got me motivated to play it -

At first, I just want to play as Noctis since I've just finished ffxv at that time (I love ffxv so much). But then I fall in love with 14 in general and grow attached with my WoL, so much so that I finally make him his own person instead of just a noctis. So I guess my biggest reason to play is the story.
