Don't do the level 1 sort of quests on your level 20 character. Save those for when you pick up another job and want to get a few levels up before you venture out to start slaying ladybugs.

Check your "current main scenario quest" HUD display if you need to know where to go next.

The one exception to that rule is unlock quests. Your new character is an arcanist if i recall correctly. Doing the level 1 quests in Ul Dah(and getting the reward of 100 exp and 50 gil or whatever the payout is on those quests) would be pointless, but doing the level 15 quest to unlock the Gold Saucer would offer your character something new to do and possibly be quite fun.

What's going on? I'm level 28 and still not been invited to a grand company or got my Chicken mount. I'm following the story quests and just joined the Scions, but no chicken. I am starting to feel robbed. ;)

Darn, I'm loving the game.

Update: After saying that I am at the most boring stage of the game so far. I am constantly traveling from the vesper bay to Drysomething and back. I have been at it for hours and finding it hard to stay awake.

Keep doing the msq, it’ll lead you to joining the grand company.

Yeah, you have a fair bit of story to go yet, and your first trial battle before you reach that point. Don't worry though, you're not that far away now!

Make sure you use the Vesper Bay Aetheryte Tickets to return there faster. They are in your inventory.

Thanks guys I got there in the end.
This is my own fault. Before playing I researched the game as far as the do and don'ts go, but I totally ignored the one that says just do the MSQ, forget all the side quests. I done everything and got my self in a bit of a mess. My level became a bit disjointed with the games main quest.
I am now charged with going out in search of tickets to acquire a mount.
It doesn't hack it to just watch tutorial vids, there are things none of those vids tell you. You have to go out and do it for yourself and ask silly questions on forums. :)

Being over the level is fine. As you've come to learn, your real level is the level of your main quest because that's what blocks access to a lot of features, new areas and new content.
