I do love that they show the opposite genders using Viera and Hrothgar, just so you know the outfits aren't gender-locked.

Would be nice if we were able to toggle socks/stockings on and off with the shorter skirts(the ankle length ones don't really need it, but the ones that are thigh/knee length would be nice).
It's so weird how many clothes combinations are just not possible in this game. For example also "socks", "stockings" or "tights" on the leg equipment that always have to stop at the ankles so you can only wear boots with them, so technically they are nothing more than leg warmers or leggings. Or how so many long gloves or gauntlets have to be HUGE or everything will clip. Or the whole topic about Viera and Hrothgar head gear.
I'm not playing any other games where you have so many gear options you can freely combine, so how is it in others?
Times like this I wish we had a few more glamout spots, something like an underwear slot and a slot for glasses/shades. But whatever, we'll adapt and make some cool glamours like we always do.
For what I experienced in other games (although I can't say I'm an expert) most MMOs either don't have this amount of diversity in gear, or some items clip badly with each other (sometimes even worse than some clipping issues in FF14). Sometimes devs go for alternating the look of some items in order to make combinations work (much like high boots technically alternate the look of many pants here, for example). That said, FF14 isn't alone in its issues with gear, but I would say there are games that are better at handling this (or, rather, they made it the right way from the start).
I think a lot of thing aren't impossible on a technical side, but potentially they could mean that modeler and coder will need to revisit tons of old items each time there's new release in order to set rules for hiding/showing depending on combination (which right now seem to work more like "this item goes over all pants" or "this item goes under all pants"), which is a lot of work and it would get only worse with each patch just for the coding part, not even testing. And this is, I suspect, the main reason why they tend to avoid making some type of items (like boots with high socks, for example, instead making socks part of the pants slot). It's not that it's impossible to do at all, it's just potentially troublesome. That said, in order to avoid that, they need to overhaul the gear system just in general, which isn't something easy to do at this stage in game's lifecycle - not impossible, but there's no guarantee they'll ever decide to do that. It's usually easier to create something new from scratch than fixing issues in old stuff.
It's a cultural thing in this instance. In Japan (perhaps in South Korea and China as well but not sure) school students often wear shorts (not underwear, but actual shorts on top of usual underwear) under their skirts for several reasons (most common being to not show their underwear when they ride bicycles, and also to protect themselves from becoming a victim of "pantsu shot"ing). I suppose they didn't really need to make it a detail in this attire, but if the habit is as common as I think, there's a chance they think it's simply normal to have shorts under skirt in school form.
Because the glamours in FFXIV are simple, the hairstyles are simple & the character creator is simple
Until people start actually advocating & requesting for improvements in such things, just keep expecting lackluster or simple.
People have been requesting more character creation options for years. It's not really up to us.
