I don't even clear stuff on my main.
I have a few 8 characters in Tonberry and a few more in other Elemental DC servers. I have alts in at least one world of each data center. This is just so I can jump/visit worlds in a server trending/making news (like Meoni jumping to Tonberry due to the Ishgardian Restoration).
I don't clear content with the alts though. I have one levelled up to 25 so I can setup a solo FC, but that's about it.
No alts.
I've temporarily made some characters when needed something for a specific race or if I'm troubleshooting something, but they are promptly deleted.
I've never felt the need to actively use alt characters.
I have six characters that I want to eventually be caught up to current MSQ - right now there are two at endgame, three around the start of Shadowbringers (one via story skip) and one halfway through Stormblood. I also have a seventh still in early ARR but might or might not level her eventually. There are a few more characters I have in mind that I would like to make but I think I've hit my functioning limit with them.
It's very much about character designs and wanting to keep them as independent characters I can play around with and glamour individually.
Usually I'll start off with the intent of keeping alts with just a few specific jobs that suit their personality but glamour ideas are usually the driving factor for that and I'll end up picking more jobs just for specific ideas. I won't level everything just for the sake of it though, like I have on my main.
I unlock most "normal mode" content because I want variety while levelling up through roulettes and also because I want to be available to help when others are trying to get into those dungeons or trials. (Also, collecting glamour.)
I don't raid and I won't be keeping alts geared with top-level equipment - not that I'm really doing that for my main either*. It'll be a mix of things I like for glamour and getting enough ilevel to do content I want for glamour... or possibly just wait for 6.0 to arrive and make the whole process easier.
* Mostly I've got Eden and Neo-Ishgardian gear with a mix of Crystarium as I can afford it and if I like the pieces. I'm not making any effort to get the weekly 450 tomes - a lot of treadmilling for not much point and with too much else to do, both in game and outside of it. I don't really like either of the current Expert dungeons anyway.
I have two characters that I play regularly and my "main" has more accomplished but she's also been around a couple years longer. I don't have any concrete goals with either. In the beginning I thought I'd stick to the msq with my second and definitely no crafting/gathering. Now she's all over the diadem, Eureka, and I think higher than my main for HOH.
I have many alts. I'll list them out by name, because I can't keep track of the numbers.
Vicious Zvahl - My Main - Male Highlander > Male Xaela > Male Highlander again with a 2 week stint as a catboy, though being my main was debatable for all of HW and Stormblood - Everything's unlocked, most jobs are 80, just missing a few crafters and DNC really.
Vyre Vahzl - My first alt, arguably my main during some of the game's life - Male Roegadyn, now Male Highlander, made for raiding as a DPS since my main got locked into tank, but also made originally to fill the last slot in a friend's static during Second Coil of Bahamut. Filling friend's raid statics would be the impetus for all future alts. Several 80s. Up to current, but haven't unlocked Bozja.
Sinistral Madgod - Second alt - Male Raen, now Male Highlander - Specifically to join in my Sarg FC's reindeer games. I also occasionally PUG'd Savage on him in Stormblood due to having an over abundance of playtime. Up to current, all unlocked, except TEA.
Glacia Eclipse(formerly Tyr Ullr, then Barren Eclipse, Then Claudia Firebrand) - It varies - Third Alt - Roleplaying alt. Initially for serious roleplay, but I found most of the RP community to be very insular, except for ERP, so it eventually devolved into being for that and being for Fantasia whoring. Only has two jobs at 70, leveled manually in Stormblood era.
Alyna Viper - Highlander Female - Fourth alt - Still at 70. Only created to watch a friend's house, but eventually moved to help a friend's static. No one likes when I play her, not sure why.
Gael Darkblood - Wildwood Elezen - Fifth alt - 50s - created to try to play with Thamriyell when he was first starting up, but I went too slow and Tham went so fast, Gael got left behind. I wound up never touching him, though I did do a 4 man floor 200 run of POTD with him.
Clyde Wyvernhide - Sixth Alt - Male Highlander - high 70s - Currently just before Mt. Gulg - This alt was made for my Let's Play. Originally had him on Brynhildr, but moved him to Excalibur to share in FC buffs and move items/aid to him more easily.
Clyde Wyvernhide again - Seventh Alt - Male Highlander - Low 70s - A literal back-up alt for recording mishaps, since we cannot rewind story progress, and since losing footage is quite easy since I record with the PS4's limited Share function.
I have several other alts, none worth mention, as they are all lower than level 10 and are mainly for aesthetics, practical jokes on friends, and ERP.
I only have alts for RP purposes frankly. They're lucky if they finish the current MSQ, let alone side content and raids.
I have alts, but none of them is caught up with msq at all, it just takes a long time and I already have a lot to do on main, my highest alt which used to be my main is only just started with SB. I actually msq-skipped one of my last alts, my lala, but levelling still takes time. And most times when I log alts I end up doing squadron + GC turnins + saucer and sometimes roulettes for money, so that eats up possible msq time.
I have a friend though who used to raid on both chars, just so they could do it more times a week with friends and not mess up their loot.
My alts are all end game. They keep me busy but i love each and every one of them.
I'm an alt-holic as well! 5 alts at 80, tons others at 70, and some others at low level. I usually do most content with 1 or 2 characters. The rest only do the content they need for whatever glamour or mount I want for them. As you well said, just for aesthetics ^^
I know the feeling of wanting to experience different charismas, especially if you're an RPer like myself. Having alts is a lot of fun in my opinion, and for all the trouble it gives, it has its rewards (like not having to use Fantasia, or the fact that a single inventory isn't going to explode with tons of glamours for the different classes).
