Thank you! I'm now going to go cry myself to sleep for all those times I wasted when I unlocked a new job and spent that time trying to fix everything manually.

Fun fact: You can even use this hotbar copy feature along with a few other macro commands to create a dynamic hotbar menu. I use it to save real estate space on my screen. This gif of an example of what you can do is not my set up, but it has a lot of the same features:

Thanks for all the replies, but the light bulb finally turned on in my head. The Black Mage isn't from the base game, is it? I feel so stupid.
I was going to buy the expansions later, and forgot that this might be part of an expansion. I was really hoping to wait for a sale on those...
Blackmage is one of the base jobs. The expansion jobs are Astrologian, Darkknight, Machinist for Heavensward, Stormblood is Redmage and Samurai, and for Shadowbringers its Dancer and Gunbreaker
Thanks for clarifying that, Rannie. This is a big sprawl of a game, and it's hard to sort all this out. THIS time I think I might have the answer. I've got to join a Grand Company and do at least one other quest before I get Sylph Management.
I'm doing enough muddling around and side quests that I'm lvl 35, but haven't gotten to that point in the Main Quest yet. So I'm getting confused when I see that it should happen around lvl 20.
yeah, for this game you want to delete the "do all the sidequests so you can progress the story" mentality from other MMOs from your brain. there's only a couple places you'll get stuck (44, 47, and a few times in each expansion). Sidequests are handy for leveling alt classes instead.
A very good resource to use are the two main fan supported Wiki's, they have all Job/Class quests listed, a very useful tool.

I'm partial to consolegameswiki, I think it's laidout friendlier. The Quest Giver is Yayake {Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (x7,y12)} The 1st quest is "Taking the Black"
This seems to be a common confusion now that experience rewards have been boosted to the point that people are WELL above the minimum level for the main scenario quests, even without completing any side quests.
I would say, though, level in this game isn't really important anymore. The thing that matters is story progress, the game will keep you up to date on level, for the most part, by just naturally playing through. There's no need or reason to grind up additional levels since you'll be synced down to a lower level to do new content as you unlock it. And once you do get the expansions, you won't even be able to unlock new job skills in the 50-60 range until you progress the story far enough to be in Heavensward story quests (which are now part of the base game)
This is slightly incorrect. Heavensward got lumped into the main 2.0 expansion as of the last patch. Because of that, astrologian, dark knight, and machinist are also all now base game jobs, you just can't unlock them until you progress the main story far enough to get to where the quest giver is that enables you to play those jobs.
I'm figuring that out, but as with WoW, they've got the leveling set so you just pop up in levels no matter what you do. I DID eventually figure out the second part of what you said. Naturally, I hate to leave '!' markers behind, especially when some of them give special rewards. But I finally figured out that I can just put on a different hat, and put that side experience towards crafting and gathering roles.
