The wither timer isnt quite random. ff14gardening lists the timers for each seed, basicly its 24 hours to get to "seen better days"/purple stage and another 24 hours before it dies. Some seem to have twice that time before they dieQuote:

It actually is, somewhat.
Thav Onions will go purple before their 24 hour period on a regular basis, and my last batch died well before the 36 hour mark (my timer said it was ~28 when I checked them).
Last year, for ~7 months, I kept detailed records of the date and time I planted crossbreed seeds, and both the purple and collection timers don't always match up, so either someone was fertilizing them without me knowing (on 6 different houses I have gardening privs for), or there's a variance of up to 10%.
My problem with figuring it out exactly is that I only know they're ready when I check them and they shouldn't be ready yet, I don't know exactly when they were ready.
I've had cloudsbreath crossbreed plots where the plants ALL go ready to collect at the same time despite me re-planting all 3 beds with tomatoes, then harvesting tea, then planting all the teas.
I don't quite understand how it works, but I know its not exact. -
